Title: DIR-655: How to log all WAN activity?
Post by: FDRoosevelt on December 30, 2009, 06:00:24 PM
Is there a way to log all WAN activity (source IP/port, destination IP/port, inbound/outbound) with the DIR-655?

I'm seeing constant activity on the WAN port as indicated by the DIR-655's network activity light and the cable modem's activity light - even with all the LAN ethernet ports unplugged and wireless disabled!

The 'Statistics' page shows the received packet count increasing by about 20 packets per sec.  But the 'Log Details' page does not list any such activity even with all the 'Log Options' boxes checked.  The TX packet count is not increasing.  It seems the router is attracting some kind of activity from the internet.

I did not experience such activity with the Netgear router that the DIR-655 has replaced.  The cable modem activity light was quiet in such a case.

I'm concerned that this activity is some kind of (potentially successful) attack on the system.  It is hard to know  if this is something to worry about if I can't see all the activity on the WAN port.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

No there is no extended logging feature.

You should not be worried: modems and routers communicate continuously with each other, even without any clients attached....So the behaviour you're seeing is quite normal.
