Title: Setup two routers 655 with Linksys Wrt54G (1 secure and 2nd outside firewall)
Post by: ask_j on December 31, 2009, 04:34:41 PM
Hi,
I am completely newbie.. I have two laptops with N and three laptops, PS3, Wii and one desktop with G. I also use Torrents.

I want setup the routers such that
1. Access N router only from computers with N
2. All other comps and gaming consoles should be able to connect to G network, so do not want to compromise on the speed if possible.
3. Since I want to run torrents, I do not want to compromise on security. Some one suggested that I can have one computer outside firewall and all others inside firewall.

First of all I want to know if this is possible? If yes then please help me.

Thanks in advance.

Put the router wireless in mixed mode. Will hurt a little bit for the N mode, not a bit for G mode.
Ultimately you can put the DIR-655 in N mode.
Connect the wrt54 to one of the four LAN ports of the DIR-655. The cable needs to go into the WAN port of the wrt54. Put the wrt54 in WAN DHCP and do the same for the LAN but have the ip range in line with the LAN range of the DIR-655. E.g. DIR-655 192.168.1.1 upto 192.168.1.100.
Give the wrt54 the range .101 up to 200.
(ps: limit the ranges as much as possible)

Just open the b2b for torrent-ing in the advance-port forwarding section. Assign a fixed port in the client e.g. 32666 and define same in the port forwarding section.

putting routers or pc in the DMZ is probably a higher risk.

hope this gets you going.
