Title: Which is better the DIR 655 or DGL 4500
Post by: Trebor343 on January 01, 2010, 10:06:26 AM
I have both of these routers atm.

I was using the DIR 655 as my main for a while and stopped using it in favor of the DGL 4500. I really haven't noticed an improvement in gaming with the DGL 4500. It is a good piece of hardware regardless of that.

That being said I am now being drawn back to the 655 for its securespot 2.0 feature. I have a 15 yo that likes to infect his computer on a regular basis...( yes somehow even with a decent AV package so I need effective parental controls).

I was thinking of somehow setting up the DGL 4500 downstairs to provide better range on my wireless network. But so far my research states I can't connect a wireless router to another wirelessly. I would need to do it via a LAN cable.

So I am back to the one router setup. Is the DGL really that much better than the DIR 655? My network consists of 3 laptops, a wii, PS3, xbox 360 and 3 desktops. I wouldn't say we are FPS nuts or anything.

If I didn't need securespot which is the better router?

Well, the DGL-4500 has 5GHz or 2.4GHz wireless (but not both at once.)

I've also read that the DIR-655 can be used as a wireless bridge elsewhere on this form, but that feature is not supported (do at your own risk.)

So you could use the DGL-4500 as your main router, and the DIR-655 as a wireless LAN connection.  That would be a...double D-Link?  :)
