Title: 1.08 Shared volume, WD TV Live, XP & the firmware page
Post by: fdproxy on January 06, 2010, 03:52:39 AM
Hello,

I have made the mistake to update the firmware from 1.07 to 1.08. I did not pay enough attention to file name, therefore I missed the BETA part.

1.   I think it is not normal to make available a BETA release to all users. On the download page there was no warning on what kind of version 1.08 is. The “release notes” file did not clearly state it is a BETA.

2.   There is no way to save/go back to the original firmware version. Of course I could download version 1.07 but I am pretty sure it is not the same as the preinstalled 1.07; and I am not sure this will solve the problems.

3.   After I installed the new version:
3.1   I was no longer able to access the shared volume from WD TV Live. I have reset both DNS-323 and WDTVL. No result.
3.2   Windows XP could not map the shared volume.

Kind regards,
F

Did you do a factory reset and reconfiguration of the box?

I have already wasted too much time, so I have postponed it for the following days.

Thank you.

[UPDATE 1]

I have restored the factory defaults. The share works, only now the device name is "dlink-1919BB" instead of "DNS-323". ???

Easy search displayed, in the list of available drive letters, the previous mapped letter followed by the previous full path. ???

[UPDATE 2]

It still does not work the way it use to work. After I reboot the Windows XP machine I had to use, again, the EasySearch utility to remap the volume. The map does not transcend the sessions.

The power LED stays ON, although OFF is checked in interface.

My WDTV Live only connected after changing my workgroup name, as stated in the following thread.

Good luck.

Not sure what your exact issue is with mapping, but I recall needing to remap in Win7 after updating my firmware and changing some of the DNS-323 network settings.

I had no problem with the workgroup name. It worked fine before 1.08. I, however, tried your solution. No result.

WDTVL is seeing the XP shared files.

When I try to access the DNS323 share an information message appears: "There is no media in the current folder." It does not say "there is no share".

Thank you

I think I only saw the message "There is no media in the current folder." when I was playing around with the UPnP settings.

I find the UPnP implementation between these two devices is poor.  Not sure which device is to blame.

If you are using UPnP, try to navigate to your files directly via 'Network Share' (might be called something else).

I guess D-Link is taking us, the non US citizens, for guinea pigs. Version 1.08 was not released in USA.

This is the page I used: http://dlink.co.uk/cs/Satellite?c=TechSupport_C&childpagename=DLinkEurope-GB%2FDLTechProduct&cid=1197319419183&p=1197318962293&packedargs=OuickLinksParentID%3D1197319419183%26locale%3D1195806691854%26packedargs%3Df9ffeaf4e83ab6d0166b8cc93b23ebbc3d83540f46ceb58f26706558f9479c4ec3df1411a95e2d40b8161bf516969212f4b253493c501653965d4b39148b4c34&pagename=DLinkEurope-GB%2FDLWrapper (http://dlink.co.uk/cs/Satellite?c=TechSupport_C&childpagename=DLinkEurope-GB%2FDLTechProduct&cid=1197319419183&p=1197318962293&packedargs=OuickLinksParentID%3D1197319419183%26locale%3D1195806691854%26packedargs%3Df9ffeaf4e83ab6d0166b8cc93b23ebbc3d83540f46ceb58f26706558f9479c4ec3df1411a95e2d40b8161bf516969212f4b253493c501653965d4b39148b4c34&pagename=DLinkEurope-GB%2FDLWrapper)

And this is the USA page:

As usual blame the problems on the product and not on the user, everything you are experiencing is a user issue not a product problem or firmware problem. Why do you need a utility to map to a folder its as easy as 1 2 3 to map to a folder in win 7 "Computer-Map network Drive-point to folder- select drive letter- DONE.

@fdproxy

Now that you've upgraded to 1.08 you can make use of the NFS connection and there is a homebrew firmware available for the WDTV Live from B-Rad that will connect to it (Great firmware too).

For virtually every new problem you face there is someone on the web trying to solve it for themselves.

My OS is Win XP, and I have already tried to map it. It worked fine until the next restart. I finally fixed it after I have restored the factory settings of DNS-323.

TrueDeek,

Thank you for your suggestion. All I want, and need, is a working NAS. I do not need extra features, for now. A homebrew firmware makes more anxious than a beta. :)

Thank you,
