Hi asonitez,
If working leave it alone. You can go to Firmware Version 1.21 with or without SecureSpot. But if you install versions in the 1.3# range, you will not be allowed to downgrade the Firmware Version to your previous version.

Well ATM I have about 132 days uptime. I really wanted to try out the NAS port though.

Hi asonitez,
People have been having problems with 1.3 range.
You could go to 1.21 without problems to try out that port.
Please remember that it is a USB Port. Only one computer at a time can access that port. You can't have more than one computer accessing the same device.

Being a USB-port has nothing to do with it. There's alot of other router brands with USB-ports that work as a true NAS. D-link wants to sell their NAS units though, which is why they purposely didn't allow more than one user at a time.
About the Firmware I wouldn't go to 1.30 or higher. It doesn't work for many.

A NAS is something completely different and has nothing to do with the USB feature to connect a simple HDD. Nor is the DIR USB Shareport feature a 'print server'.
Just keeping the facts straight, a true NAS device has so many more features and is of a different design than a HDD in an enclosure. And ofcourse a NAS uses ethernet and not a simple USB bus converter.
-
My bad, of course a NAS uses Ethernet, buit the point was that there are other brands that are allowing an unlimited number of simultaneous users on the device connected. USB has no magic "One user at a time"-think in the standard. It was put in by D-link.

According to Ubicom, their latest version of IpOS SDK include support for a commercial implementation of CIFS, so the HD connected to the USB port of a Ubicom device with correct firmware can act as a NAS. The matter is whether D-Link find it necessary to include that feature in the DIR-655. Personally I don't support include this feature inside a router. I'd rather it has finer control of router and firewall functionalities as well as more stable.

A router like the DIR-655 with its limited CPU and RAM will never have the same performance as a NAS, so even if D-Link would implement this feature 99% would be unhappy with this and crying for more performance.
I can't imagine that a buildin "NAS" would perform better than Shareport.
Ethernet (Shareport) is a more versatile solution as it does not only suport one printer or one HDD but also scanners and more devices connected at te same time via USB HUB.
Of course there are limitations in this "Silex" solution but at least it works with a wide range of devices and is probably sufficient for most home networks but not for power users.
But we should all remember: we bought a router/internet gateway and not a storage solution.
I would never exchange my Synology Diskstation with a HDD connected to my DIR.

We bought a router that has PRINTER AND FILE SHARING VIA USB printed in red all over the box as a selling point.. If D-link markets it as more than a router, they shuld take responsibility beyond the router functionality. That is what we payed for.

Since Dlink won't come out and say it:
DON'T UPGRADE TO 1.3X !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
survey of users running 1.2x: Happy, suggest buying 3 more D-Link products.
survey of users running 1.3x: Ready to smash the device into pieces and never buy D-Link again.

IF YOU ROUTER IS WORKING LUCKY YOU DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING !

Sold my 655 1.32NA over Kijiji for DIRT cheap, picked up another 655 with firmware 1.20. Left it the way it was:
Connection Up Time :39 Day 0 Hour 33 Min 37 Sec
If it were 1.32NA, it would be in hours, not days.
I am a happy customer now.
