I have a DNS-343 with Raid1 on two Seagate 1TB running on a small home network with two machines both running Vista.
Since setup, I have had no problem saving files to the device, however, when it comes to editing or deleting certain files I get a notification that the file is Open by another application or user. Not all files, just some.
I have recently reset the DNS-343 back to the default setting without any luck. Even restarting the device does not fix the issue.
I have searched high and low for information on this issue and was wondering if anyone else has heard of, or has experienced this frustrating problem.

There is another thread in the DNS-343 board (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=9541.0) describing a similar issue, except the user can't delete a folder. Unfortunately, the thread doesn't contain a resolution to the issue.

Yes, I have read that thread also. I have found other information out there; but it involves fun_plugging the device. I was hoping it was something I did (or didn't) do correctly when setting it up.
You can share Volume_1 Read/Write & Modify with two users cant you?

Out of curiosity, did you shutdown/restart all of the other devices on your network that could be trying at access the file/folder? I've encountered a similar problem where restarting the NAS didn't fix the problem, but shutting down my media player released the problematic file.

I started the other thread referenced above. My problem has progressed to the point where I can't even open the folder. It tells me I don't have sufficient privileges. Other files tell me I don't have sufficient privileges. Where I think our problems are related, you're getting a different message than I am, where some other application has locked the file. Do you have the Op Locks enabled for either share for the users? If you do, you could try removing it.

Can you please provide some information on the the files? What app created the files, type of file, and any user info.
-
Just tried to save a pdf doc over the top of an existing file with the same file name and was told the file was open by another user or application.
Restarted the DNS-343 and restarted the PC. after that, no problem. Still would like to know what causes this in the first place.

I too have similar issues on a DNS-343.
The earliest issues were generated when, under a single user, Volume_1 would just disappear from the desktop and unmount itself. If this happened during a copy, then what ever file was being copied at the time would be undeleteable on Volume_1. I tried FTP, SMB, Rebooting everything, but the errors all was persist. File in use, not enough privileges etc etc. Almost without any rational cause folders copied to the NAS end up with either read/write, read only, or 'custom access'. If you look at these in terms of CHMOD most of the working files / folders are '777' and user / owner '501', but then there's more recent items that since introducing users and groups have ended up being '755' and user owner '502'. The later items aren't readable, you can see them, but can't open or copy them off or delete them and there's now way I know of to change this. We need to customize access for certain folders, but that aside, can I return to a single user and have full permissions across all this existing data??
Is there a way, without using Funplug to re-publish corrected permission through an entire share??
Also, if anyone has in insight in to why it seems to randomly appear and disappear from the 'Shared' section in MAC OS Finder's sidebar, that would be really helpful too! I think it may have something to do with FTP access.
Config info:
- DNS-343 w 4x 2TB WD drives
- All Clients are Mac OSX 10.5 or 10.6
- All Cable-Connected via Linksys Gigabit Router.

I have been seeking resolution to the EXACT issue you're having!!! I have given up. Money is being saved, and I am going to buy a QNAP file sharing device. Same as DLINK, but it outpreforms it, and is a million times more reliable...

I am very frustrated with the permissions issues. I have a handful of mac users in our graphics department using this drive exclusively, and file management is getting really messy as some mac users will create a folder and put files in it and then that user is the only one who can open, edit or delete them.
I have been hunting for a solution for months, and trying different ways of reseting permissions so the whole group has full access again...
When will someone at DLink respond to this? This company is back to the bottom of my list for business level hardware!

You may want to look into the application saving the files to that NAS. Many programs are not designed to write to a NAS or a Linux file system due to file security's provided by the application and only function properly with NTFS or FAT32. This is when you see these complications, the permissions are changed when converted from NTFS to EXT2 or EXT3 on the NAS. I would recommend saving the original to the PC and the NAS should be used as backup.

you are on Mac, you should be able to mount the folders via NFS instead of SMB,
remember to turn on rootsquash in the NFS settings,
you should be able to chown and chmod the folders and files with wrong owners and permissions
