Title: D-ViewCam v3.0 Wishlist
Post by: Mackerel on January 27, 2010, 08:53:32 PM
I would like to start a new thread on possible enhancements/improvements on the new D-ViewCam v3.0.

Sure would be nice to be able to move it to another monitor instead of it being locked to the default or main monitor.

Support for older cameras like the DCS-900/950.  Multiple screen support (like 4 cameras on one and 9 on another, etc..)

Great Start.

Desired Features to date:

1.   Ability to run Playback application as a stand-alone application (decoupled from the Main Console).  I would like to run playback on a separate PC operating on the same network as the PC running the D-ViewCam Main Console.

2.   A playback list similar to the playback operation in Ver2.03.  The current playback concatenates all the individual motion records into a single stream.  While this is convenient for reviewing video I would like the ability to select motion events separately for export (like in 2.03).  The current single stream approach isn't as useful as the 2.03 approach for export.

3.   A better method for selecting the playback period.  The current GUIs don't permit crossing midnight (at least I haven't been able to get it to).

4.   A section in the user's manual giving an overview of the various features of the D-ViewCam software.  What is the purpose of SmartGuard?  Why do I need it (or want it)?  What are the implications of altering the JPEG formats when recording?  Why would I need to (or want to)?  What are the benefits of the image enhancements during playback?  Why would I need (or want) to use them?  How much improvement should I expect from each variable, if any?  etc.  This is a very powerful application but it lacks sufficient documentation.

5.   Record feature controls amount of disk space to retain before overwriting older events (depending on overwrite choice).  Current max is only 20% of total disk.  I would like to see this increased significantly, like up to 90% of the available space on the disk when the parameter is set by the user.

All I can think of for now.  I'll add more as I understand things better.

Allow to program autopatrol to start and end on a scheduled time

To make this sticky, please ask the moderator: ECF... I personally can do a lot of things, but making this stick is not one of them... ;->

@disaster/15:32:
Ad 1. Remote Playback over network is currently ALREADY possible without having another Console. Remote Playback service needs to be enabled on Console end. Only need to install the Playback on remote and when selecting footage on remote just select the server after configuring on remote the Remote Playback Site Management on the remote machine. You can add/test hosts.
Ad 2. 3.11 was not an improvement there. I will put it into the list.
Ad 3. Maybe the GUI does not let you, but you can extend time manually into past by date/time set
Ad 4. SmartGuard is related to motion detection. Enhancement is good if you want to export to asf (or avi) with footage lightened up into the export itself. Snapshots take raw image, shameful...
Ad 5. Added to wishlist.

Give me a little time to check and update...

Hi, after trying to make dviewcam work in my environment I just registerer to say this :
- A piece of windows software in 2011 that requires local admin rights for no good reason is just lazy and sloppy work.
- A piece of windows software in 2011 that requires local admin rights for no good reason and can't work with UAC is crappy work.
- A piece of windosw software in 2011 that requires local admin rights for no good reason, can't work with UAC, disables UAC without giving you a choice during setup and is actively trying to prevent to use that software with UAC on is shameful work that should never have passed any form of QA.
- When that previous piece of software is part of a security solution like a video surveillance system, we're beyond shame and we're entering the realm of the unacceptable and the pathetic. What the hell was D-Link thinking ? If I'm mindful enough of my security to use security cameras, I'm not likely to take kindly to the fact that in order to use them I must throw away all security best practices on my computers...

So I guess the enhancement I'm requesting is this : for the love of God please have a decent support of the Windows security model, UAC and non-admin users included.

A few more wishes.....

1) For Motion Detection Setup....

   a) Allow shapes other than boxes.  Circles, ovals, rhomboids, parallelograms, maybe even free form outline (if possible).

   b) Also, in addition to identifying the areas to monitor identifying exceptions to the entire image would be more usefull.  I find myself trying to create lots of boxes in order to avoid areas.  In my case I think exclusions zones would be more useful.

2) Metric for System Availability (or individual Camera Availability or both).  When the cameras disconnect I have small periods of time that the system is prohibited from doing it's job.  I'd like to have a metric for that I can display on the Main Console status window (upper right corner).  The idea would be to track the time from the start of "recording" to the present time while monitoring the time a camera is connected (or detecting the amount time the camera is not connected & subtracting it from the present time) & dividing the connected time from the entire time creating a value less than 1.  This would be displayed as a percentage on the status window.  Perhaps an even better way would be to provide the camera availability in the OSD section of each camera display & the overall System Availability metric in the status window.

Another vote for this...

Have a way to set a delay time between patrols.

I'll add my two posts here then:

1. BUG in D-ViewCam 3.11. Use of < character in password causes deletion of ALL defined remote servers.

2. FEATURE (LIMITATION?) in D-ViewCam 3.11. Remote Live Playback: playing video from more than one camera at the same remote site at the same time.
