I have a problem with my current setup. I have dir-825 router (with latest firmware) connected to my cable modem, my Win-7 desktop PC and wirelessly to another Win-7 based PC with a DWA-140 usb card. I am using 802.1n only communications between the DIR-825 and the DWA-140 card. And this is where I have the problem. At regular intervals I'm told by the Win-7 network diagnosis tool that the link between my router and the internet has been lost. The network map shows connection to router still good but router to Internet connection lost. However this isn't true as my Lan connected PC has not problem accessing the Internet! The only way I can overcome the problem is to break the connection to the DIR-25 and reconnect again! Would be grateful for any tips as to what could be the reason for this.

What H/W and F/W revision? DNS-Relay on or off? Try turning off DNS-Relay and manually entering your DNS servers under Setup>Internet>Manual Internet Setup> like shown here http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10526.msg62325#msg62325 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10526.msg62325#msg62325) The issue should be resolved with H/W Rev A1 latest firmware version 1.13, so if you haven't updated try that.

H/W is Dir-825 B1. F/W is 2.01EU. Where do I find DNS-Relay setting? Is DNS really relevent when wired PC's connected to same router don't have the problem? It's my wireless PC where the problem lies.

If it only happens using wireless it may not be related to the buggy DNS-relay, although all the devices I had experienced the symptom with were wireless. Others experienced your problems in F/W 2.00EU http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=9217.msg55442#msg55442 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=9217.msg55442#msg55442) but said they were resolved in 2.01EU. First give the newest beta a try ftp://ftp.dlink.ru/pub/Router/DIR-825/Firmware/ (ftp://ftp.dlink.ru/pub/Router/DIR-825/Firmware/) if it doesn't help try the turn off DNS-relay/manual DNS server setup. The DNS-relay setting can be found under Setup>Network Settings>Router Settings>Enable DNS Relay, just un-check it to disable. Look here for reference http://www.support.dlink.com/emulators/dir825_revB/202NA/lan.html (http://www.support.dlink.com/emulators/dir825_revB/202NA/lan.html)

If it's reporting "no internet connection" that means there could be a problem with the default gateway. Perhaps even two dhcp servers running on the network? What do you use the wired PC for? How are it's connections setup in the "network connections" window. Any bridged adapters? is ICS turned on? Is the network cable from the modem to router in the WAN port or one of the LAN ports?

What actually would happen with win7 wireless clients once DNS-relay was turned off without manual DNS server entry, was DHCP would still give the client the relay DNS address and since it was turned off, would break internet. Only solution was to manually enter DNS server addresses in the WAN setup, only then would DHCP give out the proper working DNS.

and that's concidered a bug?
if no manual or "alternate" dns servers are specified in WAN setup, of course clients are not going to be able to access the internet by url since the router doesn't have an entry for the alternate DNS servers, to assign to the clients.
dns relay on: clients get 192.168.0.1 as DNS server address.
dns relay off: clients get 208.67.222.222 (example) as a preconfigured DNS server address
It would defeat the purpose of DNS relay for it to assign clients the same DNS server IP that is used with DNS relay on.
Is that how it works after the bug fix?

Windows XP wireless client and DNS-relay off = picks up the WAN side auto DNS from ISP via DHCP fully functional.
Win7 wireless client and DNS-relay off = still picks up 192.168.0.1(relay address) via DHCP which breaks internet until manual DNS entry under WAN tab of router.

I took out router based DNS services and reverted back to my standard WAN DNS servers. Switched DNS-Relay off too but still have same problem. Checked status of my link from wireless PC and IP address, DNS server address etc all looked fine.
Lotacus mentioned a few things:-
1. I use wired PC for my everyday work, nothing special.
2. It's connected via Gigabit Lan with straight cable into the router.
3. No bridged adapters.
4.Not sure what ICS is. Where should I look?
5. Cable modem goes into WAN port of router.
The DIR-825 has worked really well for me right up to this point. Hope someone can help me solve this. Really frustrated.

Some further info that might help. If I get Win-7 to draw a network map I see the wireless PC going straight into the router. However my desktop PC is seen to go through a Hub and then a switch before entering the router. I also have a DNS-323 attached to the router and this is also seen as going through a switch before entering the router.
When I have the problem and I draw the network map on the Wireless PC I can only see the router and not the other devices attached to it. Why I wonder should I not see the other devices when, according to my wireless PC the problem lies between the router and the Internet?

is DHCP running on your NAS device? Advanced>DHCP Server.
What is IT'S ip address? and is that IP address used elsewhere on the network?

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?board=147.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?board=147.0) DWA-140 and Windows 7 seem to not get along together that well, many have suggested to try drivers issued by DWA-140's chipset manufacturer: RT2870 or RT3071 http://www.ralinktech.com/support.php (http://www.ralinktech.com/support.php)

The problem is solved. Thanks lotacus as you gave me the lead needed. I found rogue DNS address in my DNS-323 setup. I also configured my router to use Google DNS servers rather than my ISP's or router itself. All works perfectly now and no issues with DWA-140.
