Before replacing the router I thought I would come here for some help. If I connect the computer straight to the cable modem I am able to use yahoo photo sharing and send and recieve files. As soon as I connect through the router it stops working. I have tried everything I can think of with no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks
Jay

Can you connect to anything else ??
-
perhaps some hints as to the specific configuration of the router? ???
-
yes. Everything else works fine. other than the often drops and problems with constant speed the router works fine
-
the router has been reset back to all defaults. I have tried DMZ...firewall is turned off as far as I can tell
-
OS on PC: Firewall and AV off? Once a new device (router) is added, most firewalls and AV see this as a new network and block a lot of connections.
-
But I can take the cable and plug it straight into the cable modem and it will work. without changing anything I can put the cables back so I connect through the router and it stops working

Please, do not argue this: You're system has already been configured to work directly connected to the cable modem. ::)
So please check your PC's AV and firewall (turn them completely off) for error resolution sake

Does the site use activeX? If so uncheck all the securespot stuff inside the router and then test. Clear your cache and try agian.

all firewalls turned off and it still does not work. There is no doubt in my mind it has something to do with the DIR-655. I upgraded from a belkin router to this one. Prior to that everthing worked fine.

Make sure you cycle the power on cable modem when switching the cable back and forth between the computer and the router. The modem needs to reboot itself to pick up the MAC address of the item that it is connected to.
-
I think some more info might reduce the "guess factor". The Belkin part was new and G. knows what else is set on the network/router...
-
I am also using this in g mode. the router has the setting as if it was taken off the shelf, unpacked and plugged in.

Are you sure that your modem and new router are not defaulting to same IP address (192.168.0.1)? This might be the root cause of your problems.

I have it fixed now.
-
You never really said what error you got and now you never said how you fixed it.
Please enlighten us?
And besides what do you mean by "Yahoo photo sharing". Flickr?
-
Yahoo photos sharing is a function of their Instant Messenger. It opens another workspace where the two individuals can drag photos onto and look at them together. Since I do not live near family this was always a nice feature and a way to keep up with things back home. It worked when I was using a small belkin router, problem with that was the range on it was very low and I have a large house. The 655 looked like it would fix that issue.
The fix was actually simple. I replaced the D-Link with a Netgear router. SImply plugged it in, fired it up and things are back to working as they should. I am not sure what was causing the problem. What I do know was it was not some setting on my pc, the standard or the speed. It was the router.
For all of you who have weird problems that you just cant fix...life is too short to get all worked up over it. Routers are cheap. Buy a new one and move on.
-
Maybe port forwarding the ports yahoo messenger uses would've fixed it.
-
I tried that too. Yahoo just did not like that router for some reason.
-
Did you have Upnp enabled?
-
to be honest I do not remember. I do know I moved the computer to the DMZ and that had no effect on it. I am sure it was a simple click of something. Just got tired of clicking on stuff to not have any effect. The new router set me back $50. The only feature I will miss is the usb share.
