Thanks to www23, I've been able to downgrade to 1.21 firmware, and my 655 is once again behaving well. With 1.32NA and 1.33NA, the wireless signal would blink out multiple times a day no matter how little I changed the settings from the factory values. After downgrading to 1.21 and using the exact same preferred settings that I had used with 1.32NA and 1.33NA, the wireless radio has been rock-solid all day. Its so nice to have a router that actually works reliably.
EDIT: A couple of people have asked me how to perform the downgrade. Its covered in the link below over a series of posts:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10668.0
I'll summarize here.
NOTE: I have only tried this with an A4 router. I saw one report of someone getting it to work with an A3 router, but that's all I've seen on that. IF YOUR ROUTER DIES, ITS NOT MY FAULT.
1) Download the "dir655_Downgrade.rar" file from the following page:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r23684438-DIR655-Firmware-Downgrade-13xNA-13xRU-IPTV-Work
2) Decompress the rar archive. (i.e., make sure that you have software on your computer to decompress a RAR archive.)
3) Go to the dlink ftp site to get whatever firmware you want to use:
ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655/Firmware/
4) Reset your router to factory defaults using the button on the back of the router. The button has to be held down for a full 10 seconds. (Doing the reset is probably not necessary, but I always reset to factory defaults before installing a firmware.)
5) Install the RU firmware on your router. Let it go through the entire install process.
6) Log back into the router and install the firmware that you want to use (1.21 or whatever).
7) Setup the router to your liking. I do not recommend trying to upload any saved settings from firmwares newer than what you have just installed.

Just be aware that 1.21 does not contain the HNAP vulnerability fix.

How to do that? thanks
downgrade the firmeware

Just be aware that 1.21 does not contain the HNAP vulnerability fix.
Hnap is only a problem when you enable remote managing tour router.
-
That is only problem from LAN-side NOT WAN-side
-
That's the price you pay for returning to 1.2x. Among other things that are much more important, because IMHO this version absolutely sxcked and HNAP is really not an issue or a threat for 99.9% of all users.
-
Well I like 1.04 it's nice. ;D

Hi Cobra,
Question: What is the HNAP vulnerability fix? Once applied, will I or others still be abled to use Network Magic to manage our Network?
I would like to get the HNAP vulnerability fix, as long as Network Magic could still be used.

It is in the latest official firmware.
Thread about it is here (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10458.0).

For downgrade 1.3x NA to EU try this http://www.dslreports.com/r0/download/1510663~642681d08dfeef41c3c59ae9e02982e3/dir655_Downgrade.rar

Hi barabl,
That would not work for me. My D-Link is DIR-655 A3 USA Router, not EU.
I am still running Firmware 1.21 w/ Secure Spot not Active. Not upgrading unless I can downgrade.
-
you can go down via the EU path and upgrade back to NA.
Did it myself. But the 1.21EU was not stable on my A4.
Upgraded to 1.33NA and now 1 day+ uptime.
-
A few people has asked me how to do the downgrade. Its covered in another thread over a series of posts, so I've added detailed instructions to the first post of this thread.
-
Yeah, I downloaded 1.21 and then upgraded to 1.22 beta. I'm up for:
Connection Up Time : 5 Day 12 Hour 44 Min 22 Sec
without drops and lost packets. Considering my average on 1.3x was less than 3 days before I had to reboot, I'm feeling pretty good. Back to actual work instead of constantly troubleshooting. Doesn't mean that 1.22 is problem free -- far from it -- still have issues with auto-negotiate in some cases. But I don't have to reboot it constantly and that's what really matters.
One day Dlink will wake up to the fact that 1.3x needs help in the reliability department, but in the meantime I'm just glad to be up and running with 1.2x again.

Only time my router has any downtime is when upgrading firmware or a power outage.
Only firmware I had issues with was 1.2x versions.

Same here.

Five months later and still no issues at all with running the 1.21 firmware. Definitely the best move I made for a trouble-free router.
-
Hi All,
Include me in the Firmware 1.21 /w Secure Spot unchecked for a Trouble-free Router. I don't broadcast the SSID Signal Name and employ the Network Filter and all is well. Some people need to upgrade. Others don't.
The reason why I never upgrade, because there was a warning that you could not go back. Makes one curious enough never to tried upgrading. Or to want to upgrade.

I have an early model DIR-655 - hardware version A1, still running firmware 1.02. Generally my router is running fine. Any problems I've had in the past (there was a time when I was getting a lot of dropped connections) ended up being from external causes.
Should I consider a firmware update? As I see lot's of people having probs after firmware upgradse, I am wondering "if it aint broken, don't fix it"?

Hi Flagman,

The oldest firmware that can be currently downloaded is version 1.10 from D-Link.

Incorrect as you can go all the way back to 1.01 if you use FTP.
