Title: Is there a way to limit a user's internet speed usage?
Post by: johnmark on February 09, 2010, 09:03:44 PM
Hi there.
I have the DIR-825 and I am using the 5.0 ghz band while my sister is using the 2.4 ghz.
The problem is, my sister like to watch movies, youtube videos, and constantly downloads music.
Is there a way I could limit her internet speed?

My internet speed is about 5.5Mb/s.
Is there a way I could restrict her usage to always be 2 Mb/s or lower when she uses youtube or frostwire?
Or give my laptop first priority to use a majority of the internet speed?

Hi there,

I hope you can help.  I have been searching through my DIR-825 but although I can find all the other wireless options, I cant find the Transmission Rate anywhere!

Does it matter that both my SSID's for the 2.4 and 5ghz networks are the same?

Manual Wireless Network Setup

about the SSID for 2.4/5GHz being the same...one question, why?? it shouldn't hurt unless you have dual band clients that see both at once, in windows wireless network list it will not tell you which is 2.4 or 5 and can be confusing. usually naming multiple radios/ap/router with same SSID is to provide roaming to cover a larger area than only one could provide.

I think there is a difference between the A1 and B1 router. I have a b1 router and I  don,t have this option.

Have you try the QOS? Prioitize your PC's IP address and lower your sister's IP address. Although this does not specified the speed limit, this should help you gain more bandwidth over her. Hope this help.

For Revision B1 users, the transmission rate toggle is not available, however if trying to limit users on the 2.4GHz band you could always reduce the mode to 802.11b (4-5Mbps max throughput) only.

Setting up QoS is an option, but difficult to take advantage of or see a benefit without extensive testing.

There are also software traffic shaping tools like cFosSpeed - http://www.cfos.de/speed/cfosspeed_e.htm (http://www.cfos.de/speed/cfosspeed_e.htm) and Netlimiter - http://www.netlimiter.com/ (http://www.netlimiter.com/), they don't always work..users can just turn them off.
