Title: Cannot change From Lower Case To Upper Case on File Name and vice versa
Post by: Topgundcp on February 12, 2010, 11:32:14 AM
I have a file with a name: TESTING.txt and want to change it to lower case: testing.txt and unable to change it, this only happens if the file to change is exact same name. Do you have this problem ???

My OS is Win7 x64 Ultimate and I have a laptop running Win7 x86 Ultimate. They both did the same thing.

Any chance that the HD is not supported ??? I am using a single 150 Gb WD Raptor.

Well that is NOT an issue with the DNS-323, its Windows....
It will do the same thing on any other drive... I know, I've experience it before...

Just change 1 letter of the filename... then change it back the way you want it....

Not an issue with the DNS 323, not strickly an issue with Windows either. If you create a file on your Windows machine and call it "TEST.txt" you will be able to rename it to "test.txt". It's important to note that Windows file systems would treat "TEST.TXT" and "test.txt" as the same file (not case sensitive). In contrast, Linux file systems are case sensitive and "TEST.TXT" and "test.txt" are two different files. The issue seems to be with the interface between Windows and Linux filesystems...

This is not just with Linx FileSystems...
Same thing happens on a NTFS formatted drive...

An its exactly because Windows thinks that "FOLDER.JPG" and "folder.jpg" are the same file that it does not rename it...

Try it from any place... except from the Windows Desktop.. you'll see

I'm currently using an application to clean up my MP3 files and I noticed this problem.  The fix was to disconnect and re-map the share.  I don't access my share for days so maybe it gets into some weird state.  I've tried rebooting the unit but that doesn't work; re-mapping does.  Hope this helps.
