I cannot get the DCS-920 to send an SMTP email at all.
I'm running a:
- D-link DIR615 router
- embarq 660 in bridge mode
- dcs-920 with a DHCP reserved IP
- smtp.centurylink.net (as SMTP server)
- 587 (as SMTP port)
Primary DNS 192.168.0.1
Secondary DNS 0.0.0.0 (I don't have a real secondary DNS server...)
UPnP Disabled
Firmware: 1.03
My local CenturyLink and password as sender
My gmail account as receiver
When I try a test... I get Server Reject EVERY Time...
I tried doing a port forward to port 80 for SMTP... though I did not think that should matter... still no luck...
What am I doing wrong?

OK, I've figured this out. When setting up the camera, you must enter your sending email address twice. In the lower field where is says, UserID... it's really the entire sending email address again.

did that work for you? I have the same problem and I am starting to think the email notification feature is vaporware, it just doesn't work.

The email function on the DCS-920 does not work.

What email service are you using? Does it require authentication like SSL/TLS?

I got the correct answer from DLINK's customer support. The key is to have the correct SMTP server (or the actual IP address) and also have a primary and secondary DNS setup.
To configure the DNS, go to SETUP -> Network. You must have a primary and secondary DNS so that the camera can find the correct IP address for the SMTP server. If you don't know the DNS gateways to use for your network, they had me use generic ones 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3.
You can use an IP lookup service to find out your service provider's smtp gateway IP address. However, if you have the DNS gateway IP addresses configured, this should solve your email problems.
Sadly there has been no documentation on this issue in the DLINK forum until now. I just spent an hour on the phone to get it.
hope this helps

I'm having a problem with Email notification. I have Charter. I keep getting;
Invalid SMTP server address.
I've called both Charter and D-link about 3 times nothing seems to work.
I've tired everything they've suggested here is the server name Charter told me to use;
SMTP Server Address "smtp.charter.net"

have you used the actual IP address, rather than the SMTP name? the IP address for that smtp server is 209.225.8.224.
once you have put that in, remember to put the DNS's. the primary DNS is not your router gateway IP address (ex. 192.168.0.1) -- it has to be a real Internet DNS server. So, in the primary and secondary DNS addresses put in 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3 respectively.
