Title: To upgrade or not to upgrade...
Post by: cheesypoof on February 19, 2010, 08:42:36 PM
I am posting because I have a couple of questions. Currently I have firmware version 1.03 which has a date of 2008/05/05 on my 4500(HW version A1 I think, not sure). I purposefully have not upgraded further because of all the warnings about wireless problems. At the moment I have no issues whatsoever except occasional problems connecting on wireless, which can be remedied by disconnecting and reconnecting. It seems as though lots of people are not experiencing wireless problems anymore with 1.15 and some even with the latest 1.22 firmware. I am contemplating upgrading the firmware. Should I be concerned about security issues that have been fixed in later firmware releases, but which are still present in 1.03? If I choose to upgrade to 1.15 for example, is it possible to downgrade back if I still had the 1.03 firmware file(which I don't...) utilizing that russian guy's downgrade hack? Is it likely that I could experience the wireless slowdowns even with 1.15 or 1.22? Is this just not worth the gamble? I also would like to take advantage of shareport, by the way.

Lastly, with 1.03 I am getting these statistics:

No errors/drops/collisions for lan/wan.

Wireless Statistics
Sent :7580073
TX Packets Dropped :0
Received :4261443
RX Packets Dropped :0
Errors :3643379

The number of errors, is that bad? What is possibly causing that?

start with 1.13...

That was the most useful for me.

With it , you can leave the logging at MAX and get along nicely.

I am on 1.22NA now and had to set the logging back to the first 2 boxes.  that has given me a fairly stable setup, @ 28+ days now.

Stay away from the 1.20+ FW unless there is a real need.

Good luck!

Corroded out!

I would up upgrade to v1.15 1st as my 2nd 4500 that's running it has the best WiFi stability. How ever I must say what your on now isn't that bad, your not dropping any packets. Your just seeing errors. How many days has this 4500 been online? You will be seeing errors and depending on how long the 4500 has been on, this is reporting a total accumulation of errors. Dropped packs is good when it reads Zero.
I agree with Corroded, stay away from v1.21 series of FW. v1.22NA is much better. I'm currently using my 1st 4500 right now with v1.22NA. Working well.

It's been up for just about 11 days now. If I experience problems with newer firmware, will I be able to downgrade back to 1.03 using that hex edit hack? I think I'll just wait a couple months however until summer to do this. It's probably not worth risking at the moment not having a dependable connection while I still got college classes going. Thanks by the way for all the input.

There's no hack to go back to 1.03 from 1.15, unfortunately, but based on what I've read and experienced, 1.15 is safe. That said, if 1.03 is stable enough for you to get by, yes, by all means wait until your classes are done.

I agree with Beeder, v1.15 is good FW and seem to have the best WiFi performance. I have it running on my 2nd 4500.

OMG if 1.03 is working fine for you don't flash it and leave well enough alone.

I agree with Puff, If it works, don't fix it!
