Title: How can Window PC recognize and use the 321 formatted HDD partition?

Greetings:

For unknown reason the Patriot Box Office media center can not access my XP sp3 machine shared HDD even though I have provided the admin user-name and pwd.  My Win7 machine is able to access the XP HDD without any problem.  I bought the DNS-321 so that PBO can access to my video files. The 321 is connected to a 100mb network router.  I think that the fastest way to copy or transfer huge collection of video files from the PC to the formatted 321 HDD is by removing it and connecting it to the PC via e-SATA docking such as Startech SATADOCK22UE or internal SATA.  Unfortunately, the Window machine is unable to recognize the 321 partition.  Is there anyway, I can make Window PC recognize the partition formatted by 321 so I can transfer, copy files at will and at the fastest speed possible?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

That isn't going to happen.  The NAS is based on Linux and has an EXT2/EXT3 formatted partition, which is a Linux native filesystem.  The fastest way will be to simply use the NAS like it was intended.

FWIW, you can double the transfer speeds by upgrading the rest of the network to gigabit.

If you have the DNS-321 configured with Ext2 and no RAID you might be able to use this Windows software that allows mounting Ext2 formatted drives.

Unfortunately it doesn't list Windows 7 support but I've used it on a Win XP Pro system with drives formatted in the DNS-321 as Ext2.

There are other Ext2/Ext3 packages for Windows that might work for you. The first one I tried wouldn't handle the large inode size the DNS-321 uses. This was the second one I tried and I stopped looking when it worked for me. I've used it to transfer over a TB to DNS-321 formatted drives that I mounted in an eSATA dock on my XP system.

If you're using the DNS-321 configured for RAID, the other poster is probably right.

I'd bet money that his drive isn't currently formatted as EXT2/EXT3, so I don't see how this is going to help him save the data. ;)

How much money was that? :)

Of course his Windows 7 or if he used RAID on the 321 could be showstoppers.

Oops, wrong post, I was thinking this was the guy that wanted to stick his Windows disk into the NAS.  :-\
