Title: Random Reboots with or without Load on the router
Post by: raschnack on February 07, 2008, 07:44:22 AM
Latest Firmware,  connected to a Westell C90 for DSL service running the router in PPoe.  If using P2P i doubt i hit 2 hours before the router will either reboot or i loose internet connection until i go into the router and disconnect and reconnect..  I notice when i go into the router that it shows connected the timer is running usually uptime now around 2 or 3 minutes so it did cycle but i have to disconnect and connect again for the internet to start working.    Take the P2P out of the picture and i dont think i get 12 hours before the router will reboot or lock up at some point gamign and internet browsing.   I have had this router for over 30 days and have never seen uptime over 16 hours yet.  Not alot of google support out there, im just starting with dlink support via email and now posting on the forums.  No return on this since ive had it over 30 days but id be interested in any feedback or suggestions anyone has.  Im literate on these things i dont think i have anything out of whack on the config (though this is my first D-link)  15 years of linksys before this.   Any help or suggestions would be most welecome.

If all else fails try the BETA Firmware for the DGL-4500

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dgl4500/firmware/DGL4500A1_V102MSBeta.bin
and please post your results.

Thanks,

Make sure that you have the latest firmware. Try disabling the Dynamic Fragmentation under the QoS section.

Ok thanks for the feedback.  I will try the QOS part first and run it a day or two.   AFter that will give the Beta Firmware a shot if i dont see any results.  FYI  I noticed on Newegg there are some posts as well on this same problem.  They werent there before i bought it but this is a pretty new piece of hardware.

Well I didnt have gamefuel turned on for your dynamic setting.  But went ahead and turned it on, let the router due its autodetect and disabled Dynamic fragmentation.  will let it run for a couple of days and see what happens!.

well both of those suggestions didnt help.  Still getting lots of reboots and issues like that.  The internet isnt going down i double checked that.  so its the router not handling the P2P very well happens alot when P2P but still happens just hanging aorund surfing.  Anyone have any other ideas they want to toss my way?  Not a word from dlink for support via email, not happy with that 3 days later and no response.

We're currently looking in to possible causes and attempting to replicate your issue.
Could we try disabling the wireless on the unit altogether for a short peroid of time? See if that stops the reboot.

Also how are the antenna's configured?

By any chance would you be able to provide us your network topology and your ISP.

We would like to attempt to replicate your problem and determine the exact problem that you maybe experiencing.

Not sure how much Detail you want.

Bellsouth DSL (Now AT&T) ->  Westell C90 ->DGL 4500

DGL 4500 has cabled to it Laser Printer, 1 Desktop, Windows Home Server  and Linksys 5 Port gigabit Switch.

That Switch has 2 deskops, and a Windows Media Center on it.

Wireless is supporting 2 laptops both Wireless G and a HP all in one Wireless B.

Antenna Config  2.4ghz
Mixed 802.11g and 802.11b
Auto Channel Scan checked
Transmission Rate Best
Visible
WPA - Personal
WPA or WPA2
TKIP
3600
preshared key

really wierd 8 hours uptime now,  all morning and afternoon couldnt get it to 45 minutes probably saw it reboot 10 times between 8a and 5p
Ill disable the wireless in the morning and run it all day without wireless starting tommorow morning.  Should be 16 hours of uptime if it doesnt reboot tonight .

well made 18 hours then a reboot.   Then 3 more reboots over 5 hours.   I appreciate the help but when my wife starts saying go buy a new router im tired of my internet going down I think the DGL-4500 is a lost cause for me.    She even said money was no object lol.   Appreciate the response, never did get a response from Dlink support directly via email though,  that was kind of disappointing.  I may sit on the router for awhile and see if some new firmware comes out later in the year.  But going to go back to an old reliable one for the immediate future.

We are aware of the rebooting issue to a degree. We are working diligently to correct this asap. I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you.

Is there an ETA on when a beta of this would be available?

I'm having difficulty maintaining even 24 hours of uptime before the router appears to spontaneously reboot itself, and I can't find enough diagnostic information on why it restarted.

Run a kiwi syslogger, see if that kicks out something thats of use.

I'm running a syslogger, but I don't see anything prior to the load syslogs that indicate what might be going on (just the usual blocked ICMP type 3 packets which spam the syslog).

try disabling the INFO section on the routers internal log. See if the rebooting stops.

These random reboots have been happening to me as of late as well. I do online gaming alot and run my ps3 directly and i am getting reboots for no reason. I configured this router for max gaming and still no luck. I have had to trun back to my Linksys 350 until this problem can be fixed. I spent 200.00 on this router as its claim was for gaming. Please fix the prob, have had this router since the day it came out, I am stuck with it and will try to be patient.
Also we need more control with the firewall. It is blocking info through my ps3 which is a hinderance as well. I do have the latest frimware beta version running as well, but at this point am not able to use the router anymore.

Are you still having these issues?

Unfortunately, I am still seeing the occasional reboots.

Under Status -> Log, I have Informational unchecked, and under Tools -> Syslog, I have logging enabled.

Can we check a few things.
1) Enable an NTP server. Make sure the routers time is correct.
2) Disable the [info] type logs in the internal logging system.
3) Disable Dynamic Fragmentation.

Try changing both router encryption and wireless connection on pc to wap-2 AES instead of TKIP

I enabled NTP, disabled [info] logs, and disabled dynamic fragmentations, and have seen 2 reboots since.

I will try the wireless settings to see if that helps at all. (I was using Auto WPA/WPA2 and TKIP + AES)

I'm still getting frequent reboots with those wireless security settings, and those log/dynamic fragmentation settings.

I love this router to death, except for the rebooting. =\

I did resolve my rebooting issues recently by doing a hard reset and downloading the beta update via a direct connection and then reloading. As well i changed my config for what i was doing specifically.  No probs on its own ;D.
I did try a few things to see if i could cause it to reboot on its own, and well i was able to make it happen :o.

1) I have a third party firewall, so I turned on my windows firewall and by runing two firewalls i was able to cause a conflict with the router.
2) I did have a fluke reboot when I turned off my upnp in dealing with my other networked pc's

Only two things left for you to try or look into. One, check your pc's firewall settings and see how it is sending or blocking packets, you may have to make an adjustment.
Second, is there something that may be interfering with the router?

If you have not updated to the beta update, I would recommend it, second If so try a redownload via a direct linkup and reisntall

Hi.  Running DGL-4500 with other items on router but not turned on.  Using Dell Latitude D610 laptop with built-in wireless (I believe it is an Intel device), running work aplications using Cisco VPN.  Used to drop the VPN connection on old DIR-624, but seems to be more often using this.  Is there a setting in the router or laptop to keep the VPN from droping it's connection.  My uptime on the internet hasn't gone down and the uptime on my DGL-4500 is at 24 days, 17 hours.  It has not gone down once since original install.  Any help would be appreciated.

Well, I've tried hard reset'ing, and reconfiguring the router. I've been running the beta for a while now.

I've also had the wireless radio off for most of today after I was getting reboots every 5 minutes around lunch time on my laptop, but I still get occasional reboots. I'm only running a single firewall, and at the moment, just one PC and my vonage modem.

I'm at a loss as to why it reboots still.
