Title: Jumbo Frames

Just hooked up my 321 configured with Raid 1 and 2x 1TB drives. I am not sure what I should set my jumbo frames at?
I have a DIR655 Gigabyte Router. House it wired with 5e with a mix of wireless and wired conectivity.

First off, jumbo frames are ONLY applicable to gigabit wired connections.  They are not used on 100mbit wired connections or any wireless connection.  Obviously, in order for jumbo frames to be effective all the devices in the path must support them.  That means the NAS, the computer connecting to the NAS, and all the switches/routers that are between the NAS and the computer.


I personally found that 4k jumbo frames worked best for me.

so can you use jumbo frames with applicable devices and still have some 100mb connections on your network?

Yep, works fine.  I have several machines that have 100mbit adapters, some wireless laptops, and the gigabit machines.  All have no issues connecting to the DNS-321 or DNS-323 NAS boxes here.

I have done several tests on my setup I have a Netgear GS108T managed switch. my computer has an EVGA 780i with two Nvidia 1GB/s ports and 1 Dlink DGE-560T PCIe card


I found that the best settings for mine are.

On the DNS-321 AUTO and 9000 Jumbo Frames

On the PC hard code 1000/FULL with 9000 Jumbo Frames

Make sure your switch has jumbo frame support and check to make sure it is turned on.

I found that my Nvidia 1GB cards where slower than the Dlink PCIe card I got.

Results
Nvidia card could only achieve 9 to 10MB/s mostly 9 the Dlink Card gets 13MB/s sustained.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of speeds are you getting when transferring files to your DNS-321 when hard wired to a Gigabit connection? How do you have your DNS-321 hard drives set up? (Raid, JBOD, etc.?)
I just bought the DNS-321 a couple weeks ago, set up RAID 1, and was only getting about 5-7 MB/s speeds hard wired ( I was only getting 1-2 MB/s wireless), and needless to say, I wasn't too happy. I figured out that my network card and my router both were only 10/100 connections, so I upgraded both and am now getting 15-19 MB/s.

I'm getting in the 16-17 range with the DNS-321, gigabit with 4k jumbo frames.  I'm running a pair of 1.5TB Samsung drives in RAID-1 format with EXT2.

Thanks - I was just curious if I was still getting close to what you were. I haven't even messed with the jumbo frame settings. I might try that tonight...

There are several switches in the circuit to the DNS-321 in the basement, so it's possible that one of them may be causing a slowdown, hard to say.  The unit is used for unattended backups in the middle of the night, so I don't spend a lot of time worrying about the transfer speeds. :)
