Title: Internet randomly slows down and stops working.
Post by: nick8989 on February 28, 2010, 08:16:56 PM
Ok so I bought the DGL - 4500 to replace my old linksys wrt54gs since it died. So since I play computer games quite a bit I decided to go with this router. At first everything was fine, though truthfully I was a bit disappointed in the speed since the description on the box gave the impression of a phenomenally quick router. But that's a whole different complaint all together.

Anyway, what happens is my internet begins to slow down to such a point that no pages will load but things such as skype will still be working. when I try to log into the router via 192.168.0.1 it gives me a 404 error even though it usually goes through just fine. The only way to fix this that I've figured is to reset the modem and the router.

Right now the router has the 1.21na firmware.
When I checked the log, I was getting TONs of "Blocked UDP packet request"s every second while it was slowed down.
I'm also using comcast and they have been down here 2 times already to see if it is from their end but they says its all fine.

Thanks for the help  ;D

To get you started there is someone having a similiar problem a few post below this named- dgl 4500 issues. I am a fan of the downgrade to 1.15 fw and see if it improves it. The downgrade process post will guide you on how to do it succesfully. Any ways hope it gets you going in the right direction.

v1.21NA is known to have issues. Upgrade to v1.22NA. Be aware that downgrading your NEW 4500 could make your warranty invalid. Check with DLink. v1.22NA is good.

I have similar issue.

My config:

PC1---Link1---Router---Link2---PC2

Link1: Rj45
Link2: Wifi or Rj45

Normal use of my network:

Everything works fine but sometime i am disconnected (every 2 days)

Downloading bittorent from PC2:

I can download 5-10 minutes and after that i am disconnected and I can't access to the router setup page (192.168.0.1). The solution is to reboot the router.

-> I have tried many fixes(disable uPnP, decreased the number of bittorent connections, router reset and reconfiguration from scratch, etc..). Nothing works.
-> I have tried different firmware, 1.15 and 1.22, same issue.

Yesterday I have plugged my old router WBR-1310. Bittorrent works fine since yesterday, no disconnection, good speed.

My conclusion is the DGL-4500 has a firmware problem (or hardware), it's clear.

Can you called DLink and talked to them? How about a Factory reset of the 4500, run it with out changing anything accept maybe setting up a simple WiFi network and see how that goes. What ISP are you using? DSL is known to have issues. Look at my posting for ATT DSL on here if you have that.

The only thing I see is for the same ISP DSL, with torrent active:
- DGL-4500 => random disconnections (even if factory reset + simple configuration, change firmware, etc.)
- WBR-1310 => works perfectly on first try

I will wait few months for a new firmware to give D-Link a try. After that => ebay and bye bye D-Link

I would call DLink and talk to them about this issue. You shouldn't be seeing any resets. However if your Torrents are going they could be having an impact. Hard to say. I'm on A1 HW and v1.22NA FW and not seeing disconnects. See if DLink can help. Let us know how it goes. I wish I could be of more help.

FurryNutz, did you try to download some torrents?

Yes I have downloaded many large files internally and externally. Haven't had any issues with disconnects or slowdowns or lag times. I don't download everyday however when I do the files I get are from 50Mb to 1Gb in size. I use Cable as my ISP and use the settings in Gameing and GameFuel sticky. All my devices are static assigned IP's. I have tried both of my A1s using v1.22NA and v1.15. Both work well. I have a at home worker that uses the internet all day while I'm at work.
I wish I could work from home.  ;)

One thing I do recommend for wired networking, upgrade to Gb and Cat 6. I'm on Gb now and have been for a few years now. I'm waiting for me Cat 6 to arrive this week. Will post my results after that. Having Gb networking seems to allow for better overhead and thru-put. Never seen any issues using Gb over Mb. Having a bigger pipe for everything to flow thru even though some devices down use Gb, seems to make the network flow easier. Having good cabling is key as well. I found out that I had a Cat 5 that was not Gb compliant, was only connecting at Mb speeds. That got changed out. Cat 6 cabling is cheep. I spent a little over $100 bucks on custom cables for the sizes I need and bought a 1000ft spool for later use. IMO it's worth the money to upgrade cabling.

Have you tried disabling the logging function?  That was the only change that did anything for me

Currently testing without logging...10 minutes and no disconnections...

So the results after few tries:

Reset on router, logging and Upnp disabled, one port routed:
- Slow speed ~40ko/s
- Connection stopped working after 30 minutes (unable to join router page 192.168.0.1)

I have try with my old router in the same conditions:
- fast speed > 400ko/s
- no disconnection after a night of download

I would do this, disconnect any other devices from the 4500, do a factory reset of the router and use only one PC for this test. Ensure your cables are good as well. if your on DSL, ensure the DSL modem is setup for transparent operation, this will pass the public IP address to the 4500 and allow for better connections between them. (I have noticed and experienced that newer DSL modems are integrated with additional DHCP routers and technically should work however having 2 routers on the same system can be complicated and I have seen the 2 routers not work well or as designed, however disabling the router function on the DSL modem and setting it to transparent seems to resolve this issue.) Once the 4500 is reset, check the Internet speeds with a speed testing site, i.e. speedtest.net or dslreports.com. If the speeds and continued connections are good then go and configure your 4500 for your needs. Let us know how this goes.

OK I have done this:

- Checked my modem, there is no option "transparent" option. Anyway this modem cannot act as router.
- I have changed in modem the IP address of the configuration interface (web interface). The IP was the same as the DGL 4500 (192.168.0.1). Not sure if it's a problem on the WAN interface.
- Reseted my DGL 4500 (back reset button)
- I have configured my PPPOE connection in the DGL 4500
- I have configured one route for torrent (192.168.0.10 port 1723)
- Cable from Modem to router is Cat6
- Cable from Router to PC (192.168.0.10) is Cat6
- Started to use my connection with a torrent in background.

I will post the result soon...

Yes, I have seen this on the DSL side of the MODEM giving a private 192.168 ip address, this is not really idea since routers can also have this address for the LAN side of the router and could cause conflicts. I would ensure that either device is not using the same private IP address. Ideally, the ISP Modem should give a 2 character Public IP address, i.e. ##.###.###.### to the WAN side of the router. Then the router can be set up to the Private IP address of 192.168. IMO, the LAN side of the router could be anything you really wanted. Some people use a private IP address starting with 10.###.###.###.###. I've set mine to 6 on the LAN side.

Let us know who this goes.

In regards to the OP, can you supply me with the complete log during one of these events? Should be mostly Info priority, but make sure you go through it and remove any personal info. (Public IP's, MAC's, etc). I think the answer will lie there.

It sounds like the heavy UDP traffic is lagging all other traffic. Question is why. Here are just a few things to try. I will have more idea once you give us some log data.

Basic > Internet > Manually configure > Uncheck Unicasting.

Advanced > Advanced Network > Check off "Enable Multicast Streams"

Advanced > Gamefuel > Disable Gamefuel. (For testing purposes)

PS. Great article here. http://www.isoc.org/INET97/proceedings/F3/F3_1.HTM

PPS. D-link, want me to find you a better HTML tagging system?

OK my setup does not work (poor speed and disconnections). I have tried tips that Furry send me by mail but same result.

I can't access to the log because when the router crashes the interface 192.168.0.1 is not available. I need to reboot the router and this clear the log...

So i use my old router (works great) and I cry for the 150$ I lost. Not sure I will buy some D-link stuff in the future.

Anyway thank for the help guys.

I would go ahead and call DLink and talk to them. I have a feeling this is a HW issue with the 4500 as a different router works an the Config file you send me works on my 4500. I think we've narrowed the issue as best as we can. Time to get DLink on the line. Let us know how it goes.

Hard reset the router (hold reset button during power up for prolonged period). Factory settings will be applied.
Then re-apply the 1.22NA firmware download and MANUALLY configure the router settings.  As a start, simply set your admin and wifi password and ssid.  Leave everything else alone.

Do not ever try to load previous configurations after you flash, especially if you had trouble before.  (I know it's a pain.)  Immediately after this "virgin" config is completed, save out your settings to a file with the firmware revision as part of the name (so you don't mistakenly pick it for a different firmware rev.).

Post back with your results, please. Good luck.
