Hi Guys,
I am trying to build Gigabit network at home. I am using Win7 PC with Intel Gigabit NIC card on motherboard, CAT5e cable and DIR-655 modem. Everytime I tried to change the setting from AUTO to 1000bits in option ADVANCE NETWORK in DIR-655, I loose internet connection. But local network is there.
Please let me know what I am doing wrong and what is the remedy.
Thanks,
mgoyal

The 1000bits is not referring to your LAN speed, but to the connection to the WAN (provider modem).
So it seems the network speed at the WAN speed is not capable of handling this.
If it works with a manual setup to 100 you should be able to confirm this.

Thanks Ronneske for your reply.
When I manually set it 100, I get the internet.
So it means that I cannot setup gigabit network using this router.
What is the use of this setting when none of ISP provides 1000 connection.
Am I understanding right?

The setting you're adjusting is for the WAN port, not the LAN. The LAN is auto sensing whatever speeds your clients (PC's) are running at.

in general even ISP that provider internet via Fibre is limited to 100Mb. We have currently one in NL that will bring 200Mb. In that case a 1000Mb interface is required at the modem of the ISP.
As stated the LAN will behave as a Gigabit network. Actual throughput to the internet however is limited by your subscription with the ISP.

It actually does not matter what the final mile is made from, (copper, fiber, wet string) - All the infarstructure providers throttle data rates to provide discrimination between their levels of service.
