Title: QOS startup guide for noobs?
Post by: latino on March 02, 2010, 02:22:40 AM
Hi there, I've been looking into setting up a QOS rule for streaming video from my server. I often have hiccups (especially on the top floor in the bedroom) while streaming video, even low bitrate stuff.

But I don't really understand what needs to be done to set up a rule for this purpose. All other traffic works well and shouldn't be adressed.

Anybody know such a guide specifically for this router?

You haven't said, but your PC on the top floor is wireless?  My guess is yes.

Since you did say "...from my server", this seems like a wireless problem to me, especially being on the top floor of a house.  (You pick up everything).  What is your signal strength?  Do you have any cordless phones in the house?  (Do they say "5 GHz" or "DECT" anywhere?  Those are OK.)  Have you tried running a wireless scanning program to see if there are others on your channel?  I use eWiFi on my iPod Touch; ozzed3 made an excellent suggestion for a PC scanner: http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider

This is the original posting by ozzed3 that you might want to look at also: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10509.0

Also: What firmware version are you using?  Some of them work better than others; the latest is 1.33 (if you're in North America).

Hi, thanks for the reply.

My pc is on the top floor too, but wired (gigabit) to the router downstairs. The router is right under the bedroom. I have no phones (just mobile phones).
I've just now installed inSIDDer and switched to an unused channel, so I will be testing it in a few moments when I go to bed :)

Oh, I also redirected two antennes to the sides. I had read that where the antenna's are pointing to the signal is the weakest!

Ah, I have firmware 1.31EUb2. I had 1.11EU before yesterday. I will be doing some tests now to see if something changed for the better.

Oh btw, the connection speed is indicated as 130 right beside the router.

Glad you got it working; I just remembered about your posting tonight when a friend and I were IM'ing about WiFi.
