Title: Is my DNS323 just a lemon, or is it posessed?
Post by: monitor35 on February 08, 2008, 06:19:15 PM
I'm about at my wits end with this thing.
I still have permission issues with the scheduled backups, and they still just fail, with no reason.
Now, my 323 is creating its own random directories.
I have it backing up my MP3 folder, and it's created some single letter directories of its own. like "A" and "a" and "5" and "9" etc. single letter directories, empty, and if I delete them, they come back.
Running 1.04
I've rebuilt this thing a few times now, and get different crazy behaviours every time. Was mine made on a monday or something? Cause it's totlly not reliable, and that was kinda what I was needing when I bought it.
:(

How about you provide a little more information on how you have it set up and what backup application you're using

I am using the built-in backup scheduler to reach out to my PC and incrementally backup certain folders. The authentication is fine, but it doesn't actually transfer over new files on the PC - even though I get the "downloading" icon if I manually trigger it. As for the random directory creation, I have no idea where to start with that.
I have a pair of 500Gb drives in mirrored raid.

Can we assume from that statement that on the first attempt it transferred the existing files?

Yes, it did once.

Under <Advanced><Network Access><Network Access Settings> what do you have for "Map Archive"?

Was the first backup done on firmware 1.03 or 1.04?

"map archive" = yes

The first backup was done on 1.03, and the random directory creation also started on 1.03. Upgrading to 1.04 didn't stop it - if I delete them, they come back.

Ok, I'm still getting the DNS-323 creating single letter directories all by itself.
Firmware 1.04, and I set the 323 to factory defaults. Direct GigE connection to the Vista Ultimate PC it's backing up.
For example, the 323 is backing up my MP3 folder, and creates the single character directories.

"a"
"A"
"B"
"c"
"C"

etc, etc.
Anyone else?
DLnik support - any suggestions?

In troubleshooting, this past weekend I broke the RAID and now I have 2 x 500Gig disks. I am doing scheduled (hopefully incremental) backups to Volume_1, nightly, over wireless. Changing from RAID to not-RAID made no difference - I still get these useless directories that aren't coming from the source media.

Help!
