Title: Connection problem
Post by: djrip on March 07, 2010, 04:01:47 PM
Okay. I am lost in the shuffle here. Call me a newbie plus I kind of forgot what to do nowadays on networking.

So here is my problem.

I have a DSL connection with a dynamic IP with a new adsl modem ( Camtel NetVito 5200 Adsl +2) since my previous adsl modem died after 2 years of service plus it wasn't detecting a line so I would spend many days doing a 15 reboot on the modem to get to work.

I had the DIR 655 for 3 years or so. Never had a problem. Have the latest firmware 1.33NA, did a factory reset and so on.

The problem is when I set up the router to do the login thru pppoe, it work but the connection died after 5 mins or so then its on and off for an hour or longer. Eventually it connect but its frustrating.

When I use the pppoe setting on the adsl modem, it work fine and is faster in performance and so on.

I would like to use the pppoe setting on the adsl modem for that reason but I would like to share the connection with my ps3 and my laptop but I am having a hard time figuring it out.

I am a bit lost. Should I get a new router since I think the dir-655 is crapping out on me?

*Update*

Okay. Here is my real situation as I done some more digging into the matter.

My modem is ADSL2+ Camatel NetVito 5200 which is ADSL/Router combination

http://www.camatel.ca/Doc/NV5200.Spec.pdf

I would like to sign on thru PPPoE on the modem instead of using the DIR-655 because its slow and I find the speed to drop majority plus disconnection.

The ADSL has 3 bridge mode setting by default so I added the 4th setting with the PPPoE.

What can I do to link the DIR-655 to the modem/router? or do I need to log on thru the DIR-655?

Looking for suggestions.

Heya djrip,

Being the modem/router is single port, my preference would be to connect your DIR-655 to the NV5200 via the Ethernet connections and same from DIR-655 to your computer. Set up both the "Network" and "Wireless Network". I was with verizon and their modem/routers are pretty nice, but transmit rates are far less than the DIR-655. Now am with comcast and stuck with the same kind of router as you,, a single port. I get no connection problems from the "Hard wired" main computer and the other two wireless computers have a steady 300 mbps connection. follow sticky on settings for "300 Mbps"

Good Luck
