Title: SharePort 3.0 comments and feedback
Post by: sesca on March 08, 2010, 09:32:57 AM
I am looking for any and all feedback on SharePort 3.0. Keep the posts in this thread so that they are easier to track.

If you are having trouble with SharePort connecting be sure to list:

Router Model Number/Hardware Revision/Firmware Version
SharePort Version (should be 3.0)
USB Device that you are connecting to

DIR-655, A4 Hardware, 1.33NA firmware, Shareport V3.0,  WD Element 250 Gig External USB drive formatted Fat 32 with about 150 Gig of avi files.
One Win 7 x64 PC simply would not connect, or connect then disconnect, then reconnect and so on.
Systems that were originally connecting, were unable to connect within the next day or two.
This was with Win Firewall changes and Broadcast at 192.168.0.255. With or without these settings, it did not seem to matter.
When these disconnects would happen, my wireless connections would go off the air.
Downgraded firmware back to 1.21NA, No Securespot, Shareport V0.93 and....... all is good....all systems connect & disconnect properly to HD and Printer with Shareport version. My router is stable with the 1.21 firmware and I really do not see any drop in Wireless range. Using N only, I get 243 to 270 Mbps on laptop Wireless N Bus Card (same room as router) to low of 162 Mbps appox. 45' from router. On my HTPC, 162 to 243 Mbps with USB N adapter at 30+ feet from router and through walls, and can stream Blue Ray from WHS server via wireless to my Living Room LCD.
I think I'll quit tinkering!

I just installed it on a couple of PC's, one XP Pro and one 7 ultimate x64. It was nice to finally be able to easily install the printer driver and have the auto printer connect work right away. With v1.10 it would just sit there at the checking to see if the driver is installed stage and never find it or prompt to install it. I never got the new hardware found prompt to install the printer driver. Any way its nice and smooth now, thumbs up on that part. I originally had problems with Shareport on my DIR-655 A4. The usual wouldn't connect after a while. Two flashes to 1.32NA and it was fixed. I'm now running 1.33 and have no problems printing from my XP PCs. I had some problems printing from my windows 7 PC's, lots of blank pages and pages with one line of text. I don't know if its Shareport of maybe my printer driver. Its a Brother HL-1230 and all they have is Vista Drivers. My daughters Windows 7 x86 netbook and my 7 x64 desktop did the same thing. I printed a test page when I setup the printer and that printed OK. I just printed my WEI, which is two pages, and it printed the first page OK, but then I got a blank page and the next page had garbled text. I'm guessing its the Vista print driver thats the culprit. I'm going to install it on my daughters XP desktop today when shes at school and do some more testing. I don't expect any problems as it always worked on XP for me, but she does a fair bit of printing for her school work so it should a good test. More latter.

Dlink DIR-655 HW A4 with FW 1.32NA and SharePort 3.0.

Another switch is connected to one of the Dlink LAN ports.

USB Device is a Samsung laser printer ML-1210

Went through a lot of discussion threads (prior to SharePort 3.0), some people recommended :

1) Set "Enable broadcast addresses" on SharePort
2) Set "Enable Multicast Streams" on router
3) make sure PC and router uses the same time server

Since Dlink never dispel any of these "tricks", it's VERY likely some of these are just urban legends (or voodoo magic).

Anyway, with those "magical" settings with the previous SharePort, I could connect from Dlink wireless and my secondary switch.     The problem back then is that if the router is on for a few days, even though the PCs can see the USB device, the PCs cannot connect to the USB devices any more.    And sometimes, the PCs cannot even see the USB device!

With SharePort 3.0, so far, after the router has been on for a few days, I have no problem seeing the USB device (an improvement).      But I cannot connect (similar to the previous SharePort).     And then I have to reboot the router to be able to connect to the USB device again.

Don't know if there's some sort of buffer over-run OR setting corruption such that after the router is up for a while, the correct setting is "over-written" (i.e. lost).

I understand that D-link has an updated User's Guide for the new SharePort.    I'd REALLY appreciate if there's some more explanation on the usage of "enable broadcast address" in this thread.     And if those other "urban legends" have nothing to do with setting up SharePort, please reply in this thread so that those legends are "killed" once and for all.      Some where in one of the threads before the official release of SharePort 3.0, someone stated that SharePort 3.0 works ONLY with FW1.33NA.     Is that still true or not?

Thanks!!

I am running W7 x64 and have the following stuff hooked up...

DIR655 Router
DWA140 Adapter
SharePort 3.0 with FW1.33NA
iomega eGo 1TB Desktop Hard Drive

The software and firmware DO NOT work well with each other as my HD is connected - disconnected every 2 minutes or so.

Its troubling that D-Link is making/selling products that DO NOT WORK right. It leaves the customer scrambling on how to fix D-Links screw up when it should be PLUG AND PLAY... Get the hint D-LINK?  Enough said, wheres the fix sesca???

Problems Persist

SharePort v3.0
Router = DIR-655
Hardware Rev. A4
Firmware v1.33NA
Connecting to Canon MP830 multi-function printer
Windows 7, 64 bit
Have two desktops on network. One wired ethernet and one wireless N. Both running Windows 7, 64 bit and Shareport 3.0.

I have followed the threads discussing all of the Shareport connection problems.  Tried many suggestions to no avail.

After continued frustration I was excited to see new software/firmware updates and especially because they listed Windows 7, 64 bit compatibility.  It appeared D-Link had finally responded to the many, many comments about connection problems.

I followed all instructions to clean old version, then updated  firmware and installed Shareport 3.0.

I liked the new user interface.  Everything worked great... for a few days.
Then suddenly the same old issue... Connection problems reared their ugly head.

Printed something in the evening (from wireless pc) with no problem.
Next morning, tried to print something (from wired pc) and could not get a connection.
Several times Shareport appeared to make a connection, only to lose it almost immediately.
Moved to wireless pc that I had printed from the previous evening, but could not get connection there either.

This is well beyond frustrating...

?? Is there some way to "reset" my router without losing all of my personal settings?
Title: Re: SharePort 3.0 comments and feedback
Post by: alphanumeric on March 12, 2010, 11:23:11 AM
Instead of resetting it just power cycle it. Pull the power plug and then plug it back in. Another option is to log into the router and "reboot" it. Both do the same thing and usually get Shareport working again, for a while anyway. Your custom settings will stay but the time will get messed up if you don't have the NTP server function enabled. I don't get it? This is what they (D-Link) do, this is there bread and butter and yet they don't have anybody that can code or write software? I guess things just got to complicated for them. It too bad really because the hardware is good stuff when it actually works as intended.

Upgraded to version 3 and running latest firmware 1.33
With the old Sharport 1.10, when I could connect to the USB hard drive. it would stay connected for several hours and maybe a day tops. Rebooting the router allowed connection again.

Now with Shareport version 3.0, I can always connect but the drive only stays connected for 20 seconds or so. Always able to connect without booting the router.

And another thing I have noticed with version 3.0, the USB drive never shows up in Windows Explorer so this is totally useless.

Shareport was one of the main reasons for buying this router. What a disappointment. :-\

Router DIR-655 works well except for Shareport.
Win 7 64 bit

Removed version 3.0 and reinstalled version 1.10 and now at least I can stay connected for a usable time.
Rebooting the router is required when it's available but can't connect.

And yes, I can now see the USB drive in Windows Explorer.....!

I have the DIR-825, H/W Ver A1, and was using F/W 1.01, SharePort Utility Ver 1.14, w/ a Western Digital external hard drive connected to the SharePort.  My laptop is connected to the router via a wireless connection and was running Vista Home Premium 64-bit.  For the most part, I could get the SharePort to work, although often, it would disconnect me completely from the router, and I would have to power cycle the router to get a connection back.

I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate on my laptop, then the SharePort quit working altogether.  I had to upgrade the routers F/W to Ver 1.13NA, and the SharePort Utility to Ver 3.0.  I like the user interface of the newer SharePort Utility, but the connection is COMPLTELY unreliable.  In fact, I cannot complete a system backup of my laptop to the external hard drive because the SharePort connection will disconnect after about 1/2 hr, leaving the hard drive still working.  While the SharePort still recognizes the hard drive, I cannot reconnect to it without first disconnecting power to the hard drive, to get it to quit running so the SharePort has a chance to reconnect, and I still also have to power cycle the router.  Otherwise, when I try to reconnect, there is a constant cycle of connecting, then "did not disconect completely", when in fact there is no connection at all.  VERY IRRIATING!!  3 attempts at a system backup, and I have yet to complete one of them.  I haven't even had a chance to see if I'm able to transfer any other files (such as my pictures that are stored on the hard drive).

I have tried suggested settings that have been mentioned in other posts, but no help.  I'm about ready to get myself an extended USB cable and connect the hard drive directly to my laptop, but that is not what I bought this router for - so I can have a WIRELESS connection.

The new sharport 3.0 seems to work fine when copying files to and from a network drive using windows.  I can see the files in the drive just fine and shareport remains stable for this.

But...if I try using other programs to access the drive, it doesn't work.  Specifically, I am trying to use acrea backup utility 7.1.6 and eraser 6.0.6.  Both of these programs freeze up when using the network drive as a target.  Then I have to reboot (unplug) the router to get shareport to successfully connect again.  To the best of my knowledge, I have all the latest drivers/firmware/versions available for all of the players involved.

Both of these programs work fine when the target drive is a different 2.5" laptop drive that I have hooked up to the IDE port on my motherboard.  And they also work with the enclosure drive when I connect the USB drive enclosure directly to my computer instead of the router.

The drive is a 2.5" IDE laptop drive that I put in a USB enclosure and have hooked up to the USB port on my DIR-855 router through a USB hub.  Other info:

Shareport ver. 3.0
Windows 7 64bit
Router: dir-855 with firmware 1.22NA
Network adapter DWA-160 A1 driver 1.60

You might want to look at this website before you go out and buy a long USB cable.

http://www.usb.org/about/faq/ans5

"In practice, the USB specification limits the length of a cable between full speed devices to 5 meters (a little under 16 feet 5 inches). For a low speed device the limit is 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches)."

Have a DIR-655. Upgraded Shareport to 3.0 and firmware to 1.33NA. Shareport has been working perfectly for the last 2 weeks. Also seemed to work perfectly before updating firmware from 1.32NA. Two wired desktop computers and one Lenovo T61 laptop running wireless G, Epson R220 printer and Epson V100 Scanner. All computers are Windows XP SP3. Older Shareport would loose ability to find devices, requiring router reboot. Was so frustrating that I gave up on it. Now, Shareport 3.0 works like it is supposed to (keeping fingers crossed).

Dir-625 rev A1 1.07 08 and 09(tried several)
Shareport ver. 1.14 1.15 and 3.0

Cannot connect anything; but, mainly trying to connect an HP 5610v. Running Win7 x64 HP. I'm guessing we need a new bios.

I have a DIR-655, upgraded to Shareport to 3.0 and firmware to 1.33NA.  I have shareport time before disconnecting after print job is sent to the max of 300 sec. However, when sending a print job, it hangs after 2-3 seconds and will not print.  I have to cancel the print job and restart my computer every time.  This shareport does not work at all.  It's been since last year since this hasn't worked correctly.  I don't see why Dlink can't seem to fix the issues.  I'm going to blog about this so that people can stay away from Dlink.  Now, I'm probably going to have to purchase a new wireless router with a different brand.  I wish I could have stayed with my old firmware of 1.21 and shareport SharePort v1.15.9.  It worked perfectly.

DIR-655 Hardware Version: A2 Firmware Version: 1.33NA Usb Device HP Office Jet Pro OS: 3 WIN7 64 - 2 XP

Have been using SharePort in various versions with generally good results.  Installed 3.0 after installing Win 7 64. Have the problem many are having - works for awhile then attempts to connect constantly and fails.  Get message that the printer did not disconnect properly.  Tried various settings but none seem to work.  Attempted various firewall solutions with to no affect.  Only solution that works consistently is to reboot router.  Not a great solution since someone is always online doing something critical just when I need to print.  Is it possible that the router is locking out the device?

DIR-635 Hardware Version: B3 Firmware Version: 2.32EU (2009/07/10).

USB-devices: One Brother HL-2040, and two external harddrives.

Tried to upgrade from 1.15.9 to 3.0, but now I get no connection at all with any of the devices. The printer worked fine before, but I had very unstable connection to the harddrives. But now I get nothing. (That's stable, at least... ;) )

I tried rebooting the router, and I have restarted my laptop (Vista Business 32-bit).

I can still connect to the printer on my netbook (Win 7 Home Premium), but the harddrives are sometimes detected and sometimes not, and when they are connected they are not always shown as a drive in Windows.

Guys,  if Shareport doesn't work for you try the original SX Virtual Link by Silex. Here's the link on one of the forums/blog.

http://www.techgremlin.com/2009/08/20/d-link-shareport-update/ (http://www.techgremlin.com/2009/08/20/d-link-shareport-update/)

Here's my current config.
- DIR-655 FW 1.33NA (main router) <---- DI-524 (as access point, connected to main router)
- SX Virtual Link Version 3.4.0 (check out the link in techgremlin for info)
- HP C4280 printer
- Windows Vista Home Premium

My current uptime is 4 days 7 hours. No hassle so far thanks to virtual link (w/c is the original SharePort). My shared printer on the router works great and performs the way it suppose to; printer, USB stick, External HDD all detected in all workstations.

D-link Dir 625/(Rev.c)/3.08(latest but from 02.2009; Guys you forgot about us? We need update)
D-link SharePort Version 3. 0/ D-link DSL 200(Rev.C) usb modem and HDD WD 500Gb 5000AAG
Windows 7 64bit, intel wifi 5100 wireless card

Basically I think without the new firmware Dir 625Rev.C won't  work wit SharePort 3.0, since SharePort ver. 1.15 worked pretty well for me(at least for the HDD, but not for D-link 200C DSL usb modem, which disconnected almost every 5 minutes(the longest time it stayed connected was less than an hour ) and thus prevented me from stable connection to the internet). Now SharePort 3.0 doesn't see any device at all, no matter what I do( I mean everything described here and elsewhere on forums starting from disabling ports and Firewall altogether and finishing with synchronizing router time with the system's one)
I was expecting better stability with D-link 200C from SharePort 3.0, but I guess it won't even work without new firmware.

Well I tried SX Virtual Link , DIR-655, HW A4, FW 1.33NA, WIN7 64, and I was able to connect for decent periods of time. Able to transfer 15G of files to a USB hard drive.
Still flaky though and a reboot is sometimes necessary but certainly better than the Shareport version 3  SW.
When it doesn't work, SX Virtual sees the USB drive and is available, takes a long time to connect and then the drive doesn't show up in Windows Explorer... that's when I know I have to reboot the Router.
Then it works like a charm.... for a while.

Shareport printing problem, besides disconnects whenever i print, the printer prints only 1/8th of the page, feeds the page through and does the same thing to the next page.  This doesn't happen when i print directly to the printer by connecting the printer to the computer

@EddieZ: do you not have the "disconnect after time" problems that i (and others) experience?

Only solution that works consistently is to reboot router.

i have the same issue.
printing works fine with all computers on the network, auto-connect from print button, everything works just as advertised.
then after X hours, usually 4-5 or so, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter, when trying to print, it just says printer offline. on every computer on the network.
i can still see the printer, but it says it is 'offline'.
i've turned off windows firewalls on all computers, so i know it isn't that.
power cycling the printer does nothing.
the only thing that works is power cycling the the 655 router, then everything goes back to working perfectly.  but honestly, that is really annoying to have to do manually every morning. and sometimes more than once per day depending on how long the printer stays 'online'. constant power cycling can't really be good for the 655 either.

i've already tried the SX Virtual Link software from andrew's post above, but only on one computer on the network. i had the same issues the next morning when trying to print from that computer.
maybe uninstalling shareport on every network computer and then installing the SX on every computer will solve the problem. but since it didn't work on one, i don't see how the other shareport installations on the other networked computers would have any effect.

the other thought i had was that maybe adding a powered USB hub to the 655's usb would keep it "alive" longer since it would be constantly seeing a powered device at the end of the 655 usb port?
long shot, but honestly, i've seen no other better solutions.

guess i'll keep power cycling my 655 until someone figures it out or a dlink person finally addresses the issue. no responses from dlink on this "3.0 comments" thread for over a month really doesn't inspire too much confidence in dlink support.

Win XP Sp3 Dell laptop, and Win XP Media edition desktop with DIR-655, v1.33NA. Tried Shareport 3.0 after trying SX Virtual Link 3.40, same disastrous results. It doesn't matter what devices are connected, they are recognized and connected quickly enough, but after that, every 10 seconds, the software pops up connection error, could not shut down properly, then the router reboots and after two minutes the link returns and reconnects to the devices. Then after 10 seconds, the same scenario repeats until I shut off the software. This is before and after full system cleaning and reinstalling all of .Net 1,2,3 and 3.5, along with Aaron Stebner's .Net cleanup.

I'd like to say it's Dlink's problem, but since the results are identical with the source software, SX Virtual Link, I doubt it.

well, this didn't work.
i bought a new powered hub, plugged in a printer and an external HDD. worked awesome for a little while, then after a while, same problem.
i can see both of the USB devices in the shareport software, but when i try to connect, it just sits there connecting for a while, then connects for a second and then disconnects.

very frustrating.

I've followed this thread for a few weeks now hoping that D-Link would get off their butt and do something to fix PC Shareport.  But nothing has happened, and it seems like D-Link thinks we will all go away.  Like many, I bought my DIR-655 router to use the USB port.  But nothing I seem to have tried works.  My stats:

DIR-655 router,  1.33NA firmware (was using 1.32NA and that did not work either)
                       A4 hardware
Windows 7
PC Shareport 3.0  (was using an earlier version and that never worked either)
USB external hard drive

I've read many forums and tried many things, and every time after a few days of success, Shareport decides it wants to stop working and will not connect my USB hard drive.  So I uninstall then reinstall Shareport so I can get another few days of USB connection, then the cycle starts all over again.

The old shareport worked great with an older firmware. Now i can't downgrade the firmware and i lost the shareport function, a key feature that made me pick this router... now it's trash for me.

I can't belive Dlink is doing such a bad work.

I can't believe you're surprised. I've been suffering with this problem in its varying flavors for two years. Dlink should really go through alpha and beta before publishing and advertising the item as ready for prime time. Since the software has had such a bad track record, then the hardware shouldn't have been released either. It can't work without working software.

What a shame.

DIR-655, A4 Hardware, 1.33NA firmware, Shareport V3.0.0 R1 (SXUPTP 3.3.8.0), ANY DEVICE.

Hi,
I lately upgraded the firmware to 1.33NA, and installed the Shareport V3.
I have 2 PCs:
1. On the first one, I have Win7 64bit: installed SharePort V3 64bit, and it worked perfectly, discovering any USB device (Mass storage, HP printer)  ;D
2. On the second, I have WinXP 32 bit, therefore I installed SharePort V3 32bit. But here, it discovers NOTHING AT ALL!!   >:(
I tried configuring the broadcasting as mentioned before, but still nothing!   :'(

Any idea? anyone? ??? ??? ???

Thanks

Hi,

DIR-655 A2 with FW 1.34b03 using a Canon Pixma iP4500 photo printer on Windows 7 Pro x64.  Shareport v3.xx

As some other folks are seeing, connecting/disconnecting works fine but for me, I get maybe one photo to print, and then others will print maybe 1/3 or 1/2 on a page, spit out that page, then another 1/3 or 1/2 of the image..spits out THAT page....

The secondary pages also tend to be in psycodelic colors or even monochrome with seemingly no predictable outcome to the funky sections....

Text pages seem to print out ok, altho I have not tried to print any long text documents.

I have another PC here with Win 7 X64 that has been working fine to my knowledge....

I have rebooted the router and tweaked my WIn7 firewall settings per other's suggestions but it hasn't changed my results....

I have adjusted the printer driver settings as to the spooling settings and no changes....

I ran printer diagnostics from Win7 and it said something about the printer spooler being wonky

PLEASE HELP !!

Hi - as you can see I'm a newbie to this forum.  I have just purchased the DIR-655, and am wondering if I should save myself the trouble and return it (I have not unpackaged it yet).

Should I go for it and join the crowd of seemingly disatisfied customers?  (I need to be able to print with a NON-wireless printer: HP Officejet Pro K550.)

I just installed the SX Virtual link and having success compared to the Shareport 3.0.  However, I have a theory why shareport does not work....I may be crazy but I think the Dir-655 and our PCs lose connectivity for say a mili second.  Shareport cannot handle it and disconnects from the USB devices and cannot recover. While SX Virtual is more forgiving.  I totally lost internet connectivity and when it came back the SX Virtual connected right back to my printer.  Never happened with Shareport. This occurs with my wireless laptop and wired desktop.  Anyone else have similar experience?

Similar yes, but the router actually reboots during this and all computers on my network lose connectivity, and when the router does come back up it doesn't necessarily reconnect to the computers. With both SX Virtual and Shareport.
unacceptable.

Ok...here's my setup:

router: DIR-655 (very new), H/W ver. A4, firmware 1.33NA
desktop: Windows XP SP3
laptop: Windows Vista Home Premium
SharePort 3.0.0 R1 (SXUPTP Driver : 3.3.8.0)
CANON MF4150 multifunction printer

Frankly, I'm about ready to throw this router out the window....actually, no, that's not really fair.  The router is GREAT...but SharePort is driving me CRAZY.

I think my problems are very much like those of others here.  When I first installed SP off the installation CD things were working fine...and then they weren't.  When I boot up my systems, SP reads the Canon printer fine across the router; but when I try to connect it says Connected, and then I get a balloon that reads "Canon printer failed to disconnect properly" and SP tries to reconnect...and this loops ad infinitum (I have to go to the Task Manager to kill the process).  The real kicker is it HAS worked and I have NO idea why it just decides NOT to work.  I know it isn't a hardware problem because a direct connection to the printer always works.

I've tried uninstalling and updating and reinstalling my drivers as per the troubleshooting...I always know it works when SP connects and I hear the sound tones that my printer drivers are being loaded up...that seems to be the key to it working...but I don't get that anymore.  I'm a PhD student and I just don't have time to troubleshoot something that should be pretty simple and straightforward...I am PRAYING someone can resolve this!  >:(

peace

EDIT: ok...now, MAGICALLY, everything is working fine again....for now?  About the only thing I can say to those with laptops having this problem is: don't let your laptop enter Sleep or any other mode while SharePort is running...it seems to create a whole bunch of problems - at least if you're connected to your printer at the time.  As it stands, I'm afraid to breathe on my computer for fear SP will decide to have another schizoid embolism.....
Title: SharePort 3.0 does NOT work with OmniPage 16
Post by: traumaturgist on May 16, 2010, 04:47:07 PM
So as a final chapter to my harrowing experience with SharePort, I have finally got everything working on both my machines.  However, I now realize that while I can connect/disconnect without any problems, I find I cannot use OmniPage 16 to scan to PDF because as far as it's concerned, SharePort is already taking up the scanner...at least OP's Scanner Setup Wizard is telling me it can't configure OP because the scanner is in use by another application when I'm connected.

I find this exceedingly strange, since OP16 DID work with SharePort until I did everything the troubleshooting pages told me to do - install updated printer drivers, upgrade SharePort, etc. etc.

Since OP is crucial for my work, I can no longer use SharePort.  Sorry, but this has been a huge waste of time.  :'(  Maybe someday someone will update SP and things will work out..

I suggest you look to a BI-Directional USB print server.  You will be much better off in the long run.  The Bi_directional units cost more than the basic ones, but it "should" get the job done.

Of course you could also look to a all-in-one that has LAN port built-in..... I use a Brother MFX-7820N from a couple years back, but it runs like a champ for mono-laser output.

There are tons of those types of printers out now....

Been there, done that. Doesn't work with my printer. Unfortunately, print and scan quality is so good, that unless the printer seizes up and dies, I won't be replacing it anytime soon. I would love to try a printer with built in ethernet or wifi, just no reason to cough up any coin.

Router Model DIR-825 Rev B fw 2.02?
SharePort Version 3.0
Connecting to Canon Pixma Pro9000-II

Got it working!  BUT here is my story anyways...
Originally used V1.01 on XP worked fine.  Upgraded to W7 Pro & installed V3.0.  Printer was available but couldn't connect, always searched for drivers after clean installs of all the components.  Sounds familiar?

Turned off Windows Firewall -> works. Turned logging on and watched for dropped packets.  Found router sending UDP packet from port 1030 to 19540.  Created a rule in addition to the two that Shareport added to allow UDP packets from the router on port 1030 to 19540.  Only one day, but it seems stable.

Firmware: 1.33NA
Hardware version: A3
Shareport version: 3.0

I too am extreamly dissapointed with D-link and the way this problem is being handled.  I'm having the same issues as so many others in this thread.  I'm trying to connect to a 1GB external drive via Shareport, but as others have said, the connection is flakey and drops from time to time.  I also can't see the drive in Windows Exporer eventhough Shareport said it has connected to the drive.  I really want to use the Shareport functionality so WTF D-link??? Why isn't anyone from D-link at least providing some status updates to this problem in this thread?  I'm really, REALLY unhappy with this router issue.  Come on D-link!!! Fix this issue, and please PLEASE let us know what is going on!

All the USB Drives I have tried work OK for me. I have to wait longer than when connected directly via USB when I first connect with SharePort, but I think that is because Windows scans the whole disk before you can access the drive letter. With 1TB+ drive, you may have to wait a few minutes (longer if the connection is 802.11g, which is a slower connection than 802.11n or Ethernet, from the laptop or computer).

I've got SharePort 3.0 running on a DIR-655. This is hooked up to an HP Laserjet 1018, laptop running Windows XP SP3 on a dual-core processor and 2 gigs of RAM. The router is doing fine--a few disconnects in the course of a day but that's bareable. What isn't, is that when I submit several print jobs within a few minutes, they simply gather in the print cue and take minutes to print. 3-4 minutes is a normal time frame--and these print jobs are a few hundred kilobytes each--just a couple of pages.

This is a major irritant. Is there something that can be done?

I've gotten used to the fact that submitting one long document (over 15 pages) gets the end cut off. I now simply send pages 1-15 as one print job, then pages 15-30 as a second, etc.  If that could get cleared up, it would be great, but I'd rather have the first problem I mentioned, taken care of.

EDIT: Today I had the printer que open (by double-clicking on the print icon in the system tray), and saw that for quite a while after the current print job had been printed, that print job stayed in the que, and was still considered to be "printing." It was only after that print job disappeared from the cue, that the next one started printing--almost immediately after the first one left the que. I'm not sure why this is the case, as when any computer is wired straight to the printer, everything is fine.

D-Link SharePort enabled Product Model:  DIR-655 A4

D-Link Product FW Version:  1.34NA

Operating System being used: LAPTOP Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit - ISSUE #1
PC  Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 64 Bit - ISSUE #2
LAPTOP Windows XP Professional SP 3 32 Bit - ISSUE #3
SharePort Version:  3.0

USB Product (Printer, Disk Drive, or other device) Model and Driver Version:  Canon MX310

Describe the issue:
Issue #1: On the HP Laptop.  I tried uninstalling and re-installing the Shareport on the Windows 7 Laptop and it is still doing the following ...  On the shareport menu I show the Canon MX310 Series Printer as being AVAILABLE however it will not connect. It opens a second box saying "Connecting to Canon MX310 series. Please wait..." after about 30 seconds the box goes away and the printer still says AVAILABLE, but it will not connect to the USB printer, I am guessing this issue will be fixed with a future update to firmware.

Issue #2:  On the PC with Vista SP2 64bit, I installed the Shareport 3.0 and it connected to the USB printer, however after rebooting the PC the same issue occurred as what is reported in Issue #1.  I then uninstalled and re-installed the shareport and the problem did not get corrected.  So basically I am having issues with Vista and Windows 7 both 64bit operating systems.

Issue #3...  6/18/10  Up till recently this Notebook has had few issues, sometimes having to reboot the router for connection issues but other than that it has been fine... till yesterday... FOR WHATEVER REASON NOW ON THE ONE NOTEBOOK THAT HAS THE WORKING SHAREPORT 3.0 WITH WINDOWS XP A ONE PAGE DOCUMENT PRINTED FROM THE WEB SAY AN ARTICLE PRINTED FROM ESPN OR ANY OTHER SITE NOW TURNS OUT TO TAKE UP TO 5 PAGES SOMETIMES PRINTING ONE LINE ON THE FIRST PAGE THAN A COUPLE MORE ON THE SECOND.... ETC... ETC...   WHEN I HOOK THE NOTEBOOK DIRECTLY AND PRINT THE SAME ARTICLE IT PRINTS GREAT AS IT SHOULD BE... SO ONCE AGAIN ANOTHER ISSUE WITH THIS ROUTER.  ANYONE WITH ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO FIX THIS I WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATIVE

DIR-655 A3/1.34NA
SharePort is indeed 3.0.0 R1
Device is:  Maxtor OneTouch III, 300G
OS is: Windows 7, 64bit

While the annoying random disconnect problem a little while into transfers is gone now unless I try to move a really large amount of data at once I am still having a problem with initial connections.

If I reboot the router and hard drive I can connect initially no problem and use it fine.  However, after an unknown period of time later, when trying to connect the SharePort utility connects, says that I am indeed connected, but then stalls without adding the drive letter to Windows.  Then shortly afterward Windows reports that the drive disconnected improperly as the SharePort utility reports that it is trying to re-connect to the drive.  This happens in an endless circle until I give up and, when the opportunity presents, quickly hit the disconnect button while it thinks it is connected still or just give up and close the utility.

Hope the information helps!  Ta-Ta

I have been back and forth with DLINK support and Windows Live OneCare support upteen times.  OneCare will no longer entertain issues between windows firewall and routers.  This is definately an incompatability issue between the DIR-825s & Shareport 3.0 & Windows Firewall.  When I have Windows Firewall completely shut-off it works flawlessy and can connect/disconnect/reconnect/print flawlessly (have not tested other USB devices).  There is also a new (free) security and & antivirus application offered by Microsoft (Microsoft Security Essentials) that I upgraded to from Windows Live OneCare (being terminated).  The Firewall and Anti-Virus have no affect on Shareport 3.0 and all is working very well now for 3-days straight.  Reccomend you try it to solve this very frustrating issue with DLINK routers/Shareport/Windows Firewall/.  Good Luck....

Router Model Number: DIR-655
Hardware Revision: A4
Firmware Version: 1.34NA

SharePort Version: 3.0.0 R1 (SXUPTP Driver : 3.3.8.0)

USB Device that you are connecting to: Canon MP360 (Printer)

Operating System: Mix of Windows 7 x86 and x64 in the house

Since I updated the desktop and laptop computers in the house to SharePort Utility 3.0 I have been unable to maintain a steady and stable environment within with to print. The utility has yet to work properly and often hangs for hours when trying to configure auto connect (automatically connect only for printing). I have confirmed that there is a firewall exception for the application on each computer and I have attempted with the firewall turned off. The printer has worked just fine when previously plugged into each computer directly via USB.

I have spent hours trying to get this to work and have endured far too much frustration for what is a brutally simple thing to do via Windows 7 alone. I hate having to leave my PC on for others to print but it may come down to that as the SharePort feature on this router is obviously not working since the update to the SharePort utility. Previous versions worked fine and I really don't want to return my D-Link but at this rate I will have no choice but to return it.

Try MS Security Essentials (Free!).  As soon as I upgraded to MS Security Essentials, it fixed the Firewall Problem.  DIR-825s and Shareport 3.0 is working flawlessly for me on my printer (on 2-Xp PCs & one WIN 7 PC).  This is the only security software I'm using so there is nothing else to cause an issue.  Everything is working flawlessly now for over a week!!!

Try this if you are at your wits end...IT WORKS FOR ME  ;D !!!!  Good Luck !!!

Let me add my stone to the pile...

I have a DIR-825 (fw 113na, SP 3.0)
I use it with:
A desktop PC running XP SP2 Pro 32 bits with wired connection
A laptop running Windows 7 64 bits (fresh Install with the SP3.0 version) connection wirelessly or wired
   A Canon Multifunction Printer MP830

I have had the DIR-825 from its very beginning, and have been through every update of the shareport software, and this last version is the worst ever.
The very first one worked without problems!!!
The second one was unreliable it would connect 70% of the time
The third one was a little bit better but still unreliable,
The current 3.0 is totally unreliable, it will connect may be 40% of the time

Now for the specifics:
Installation is fine configuration and initial connection is fine both in permanent connection or auto connection when requesting to print (my most used configuration).
But when like me you print rarely like a couple of times a week, you never know if it will actually be able to connect. Sometimes it works, Often it does not. When it does not connect, you can see the Printer in the Shareport window, but the connection does not work. If at this point you try to connect manually, it may show connected for a short while, but it does not actually work, and will drop the connection.

When it does not work, the way to always solve the problem, is to power cycle the router. Off for 10seconds, then ON, wait until all networks are up again, and then evrything works fine. When it works I have no issue, no connection drop, everything is perfect both in printing mode and in scanning mode for my multifunction printer Canon MP830.

One other thing I noticed but does not seem related to the issue. Sometimes at the end of a print job, the print task does not close, the printing window stays open with the progress bar at 100%, and you cannot end the task except by disconnecting manually.

I bought this router for the sole purpose of Shareport, I must say it has been nothing but a Nightmare.

two suggestions:
You need to enable some kind of error logging so we can send you precise feedback on what goes wrong with the router and you can get it to work!
You should try to offer some kind of reset function inside the shareport windo, to reinitialize the printer port/driver

Thanks you for listening

Does DLink even read these comments?

I have the DIR655 FW1.34NA A4 SharePort have tried vs3.0 and 1.1.0 R1. NOTHING worked with vs3.0. No hard drives. No flash drives. No printers.

With vs1.1.0 I can connect to a USB drive. But my printer will still not work through the router. I was so excited when I purchased the router because I could finally leave my printer connected without having to constantly having to go to the desk just to print. DLINK YOU DISAPPOINT AND YOUR CUSTOMER/TECHNICAL SUPPORT SUCKS ASS. I think you have a bunch of high school kids sitting in a room playing PSP. Hire some competent technicians who actually give a damn if the product works as advertised.

USB Product Model : Samsung Multifunction Printer SCX-4200

Print Driver Version:3.04.96.05

Scan Driver Version: 2.02.51

Describe the issue:
Attempting to use Scan functionality cause any program, including windows, to freeze.

Describe the steps to reproduce the issue:

Opened Adobe Photoshop CS tried to import image from scanner like normal, program just continues to attempt but never actually connects to the MFP's scanner.

Attempted to start scan from Windows its self but again scanning program just continues attempting, it did how ever trigger the scanner on the printer to start and preform the scan but the program in windows became unresponsive.

Printer works fine when connected direct to either of my two computers both running Win 7 64bit.
Printer works fine when either machine attempts to just print

Just to be sure, you are not trying to auto connect to the scanner right?

Only printer can auto connect, for the scanner, you have to connect manually first with shareport, then use the scanner.

Shareport 3.0 does not work with EU Firmwares - in my case the DIR-825 2.02EU. I hope you guys will fix this soon! (Btw. Shareport 1.15.9 works great, so it is not a Firewall issue)

D-Link SharePort enabled Product Model: DIR-825

D-Link Product FW Version: 2.02EU

Operating System being used (Windows XP?, Vista?, Win 7 32 or 64 bit, Mac OS 10.5 or 10.6, etc) including any Service Packs or 32/64 bit information: Win7 x64

SharePort Version: 3.0

USB Product (Printer, Disk Drive, or other device) Model and Driver Version: HP DeskJet 990cxi (but it won't work regardless what I connect)

Describe the issue: Shareport 3.0 shows: "No Device Servers found"

Describe the steps to reproduce the issue: Install Shareport 3.0 on a working System with WW or NA Firmware on the router. Then Switch the FW to an EU Firmware. Result: Shareport will stop working.

shareport 3.0
vista home 64 bit latest service packs/updates.

smae problems as always.  Printer is listed as a device for about 36 hours and then disappears.  relaunching shareport does nothing.  The router must be power cycled.

In addition, the shareport software gets blocked on startup by vista's UAC.  I disabled UAC, no change.  I prevent shareport frpom running on startup and then had it start as a task with full privileges, same issues.

i even uninstalled avast and superantispyware and went with Security essentials as recommended by someone else.  same thing. no devices detected after two days.  Printer sleep mode was also disabled.

IT'S a ROUTER PROBLEM

I have symptoms similar to http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=11778.msg69911#msg69911 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=11778.msg69911#msg69911)

A new laptop with Windows 7 (x64, Professional) prints the first page flawlessly, but then prints blanks or garbled text forever until print job Canceled at the printer.  I can print single page documents repeatedly without error.

Details:

Printer:
Brother HL-5140, using Windows 7 printer drivers

Norton Internet Security used.

Notes:
* The same wireless router and printer worked fine with a prior laptop using Vista x64 Ultimate and Nortons Internet Security.
* The USB thumbdrive and USB Scanner work fine via Shareport and the present laptop.
* The present laptop and printer work fine when directly connected via USB.  Only Shareport fails in the manner described above.

I'm stumped and irritated.

Router Model Number: DIR-655
Hardware Revision: A4
Firmware Version: 1.34NA

Operating System being used: Win 7 64 bit

SharePort Version: 3.0

USB Product (Printer) Model and Driver Version:  HP Printer Officejet 4215xi

Describe the issue: Shareport does not stay connected.  Printer works when directly connected to laptop.

Describe the steps to reproduce the issue: At first had trouble just seeing the printer so I uninstalled Shareport and downloaded again (3.0).  Now, it sees it but doesn't connect.

Read else where in the forums: power cleared the router = stays connected.
Sent a print command, and the printer gets error: 0xd0840001 (which googling it, looks like a power surge)
Upon power clearing the printer, the printer then gives me a print cartridge error.

Going to uninstall shareport software again.
Let me know when you come out with version 4.0.   :'(  :'(

Also only bought Dlink for just this purpose and I can't get it to work with ONE computer...  :o

Router Model Number: DIR-655
Hardware Revision: A4
Firmware Version: 1.34NA

SharePort Version: 3.0.0 R1 (SXUPTP Driver : 3.3.8.0)

USB Device that you are connecting to: Brother MFC-290
Operating System: Vista

My printer says it's available, but I am not able to connect.  I am able to connect only if I reboot my laptop and the router (DIR-655).  That's the only reason I bought this router.  I didn't need the N router, speed is not that important to me.  So PLEASE fix this connection problem.

Thanks

A4 hardware, fw 1.34NA, Shareport 3.0., Brother HL-5340 printer. Three computers total, A Dell Inspiron 1504 running XP home, a Lenovo X60 running XP pro and an AMD Dual core box that started with Vista 64 and then was upgraded to Win 7 64 home premium.  SharePort worked fine on all three computers until the Win 7 upgrade was done. Once win 7 64 was on the system the problems begun. When I try to print with the Windows 7 computer the printer ejects a partialy printed page and several pages of junk at the top of the page.

If I reboot the router and then print with either of the XP machines, everything works fine! If I then try to print with the Windows 7 machine the usual misbehavior occurs.

If I then try to print with one of the XP machines, their output is corrupted just like the Win 7 machine.

Re booting the router and turning off the printer gets back to the begginning.
It looks like maybe a buffer is getting corrupted and not cleared. Please fix this

I have an 825 with the latest firmware and SP 3.0. I have the same connection problems reported by everyone else - some days it works well - some days I can connect but not print - some days I have to reboot the router and/or my pc to get it to work.  I was having trouble today but managed to get it to print - I thought I would share my experience in case it helps someone else.

I disabled my firewall (Norton) and re-connected to the printer. I then printed one page at a time until I got a printer error. I disconnected and reconnected to the printer and was able to finish printing, still one page at a time. I think it was necessary to wait until the previous print job was finished before sending the next page. A pain, but I got it done.

While I applaud dlink for starting this forum thread, I think it is pretty sad that, considering all the problem reports, the firmware is almost 8 months old and the SP 3.0 utility is 6 months old.

My son is a high school senior this year, and he will have lots of homework printing to do. Please, for his sake, get this thing fixed  ???

One thing i can say about the router Dropping,  i fixed this by enabling DHCP removing all old devices from the Routers history, and having all my PC Obtain IP automatically.  Did this a month ago, and my Router has not reset once on us

Problem with Shareport 3.0

When I try to enable auto-connect "Connect automatically only for printing"
the program says it is connecting to the printer then changes to the next message:
"Checking if the device's driver is installed. Please install it if it is not already installed."
in which it just hangs there never closing this message window until I click cancel.
I can see in the background that Shareport 3.0 states it is connected, then after a certain time (about 30 secs) it disconnects.
I have tried installing the printer drivers first with the printer connected to the PC's usb and then installing shareport and with
shareport already installed.
I have tried installing shareport first and then installing the printer drivers. Actually I can't even get through the driver installation
before Shareport disconnects again from the printer and driver installation fails.
I have tried Shareport 1.1 on my PCs but had trouble installing it and getting it to work on my HP laptop, so I was hoping the newer version would
work better. Instead after all the trouble I had getting 1.1 to run on the PCs, version 3.0 doesn't work properly and I can't print. I managed to get
version 1.1 working on my Gateway PC again so I guess I will revert back to 1.1 on my HP PC and hope it works.

HP Pavilion desktop A6402F and gateway desktop GM5483E
both PCs have same problem, same network and Windows setup:

Wired network connection

I have played with the Windows Firewall setup (as I do not have any other firewall programs setup on these PCs) to no avail.
I manually added program shareport utility with TCP port 19540 even though this was supposed to have already been done by setup program but that didn't work.
I even tried disabling Windows Firewall but that didn't work either.

Windows Vista 64bit SP2
HP Photosmart C4340 series USB printer
DIR-628 router with hardware version: A2 and Firmware Version : 1.24NA, 2010/04/12
My USB type is : Shareport
Windows states that I am connected to a "private network" with network discovery "on".

At this point I have given up, uninstalled shareport and plugged the printer into a PC that I will now leave on. contacted tech support and am waiting to hear back. Will advise

D-Link SharePort enabled Product Model: DIR-655

D-Link Product FW Version:1.32NA

Operating System being used (Windows XP?, Vista?, Win 7 32 or 64 bit, Mac OS 10.5 or 10.6, etc) including any Service Packs or 32/64 bit information: Win XP Pro (SP 3)

SharePort Version: 3.0.0R1

USB Product (Printer, Disk Drive, or other device) Model and Driver Version: Lexmark E232 v9.3

Describe the issue: The printer can print when connected locally to the PC. However when attempting to connect and print via Shareport it does not work.
Shareport does not detect the printer, even though the cables have been swapped, router, and printer reset. Drivers and shareport uninstalled and reinstalled.
I do notice that the indicator light on the router for the USB blinks when the printer is connected.
The router USB connection is set at 'shareport' (instead of WCN)

Describe the steps to reproduce the issue: plugged the printer into the router and turn on the printer, launch shareport. The printer is not detected.

D-Link SharePort enabled Product Model: DNS-323 with Shareport Addon 1.00

D-Link Product FW Version: 1.09

Operating System being used (Windows XP?, Vista?, Win 7 32 or 64 bit, Mac OS 10.5 or 10.6, etc) including any Service Packs or 32/64 bit information: Windows 7 32 bit

SharePort Version: 3.0

USB Product (Printer, Disk Drive, or other device) Model and Driver Version: HP Laserjet p1505

Describe the issue: Shareport reports that printer is available but never connects.

Describe the steps to reproduce the issue: Install SP 3.0, run SP and wait until the configure printer is gone. Open again SP and note that printer is available. Click on connect. It stays for a while trying to connect and ends not connecting.

After reading all the Internet, and notice that several of you had this very similar problem, I've downloaded the updated SX Virtual Link (http://www.silexamerica.com/support/software/svl.html) and it connected to the printer. Note that another notebook at home connected to the printer at DNS-323 using SP 3.0 flawlessly - I think something bad happened to firewall, but I wasn't able to find any differences between two configurations. Installing SX driver forced a new firewall config (yes, I've tried to reinstall SP 3.0 several times) that allow it to work.

Let's see how long it lasts.

D-Link SharePort enabled Product Model: DIR-655

D-Link Product FW Version: 2.00NA

Operating System being used (Windows XP?, Vista?, Win 7 32 or 64 bit, Mac OS 10.5 or 10.6, etc) including any Service Packs or 32/64 bit information: Win 7 Professional 64 bit

SharePort Version: 3.0.0 R1 (SXUPTP driver: 3.3.8.0)

USB Product (Printer, Disk Drive, or other device) Model and Driver Version: HP P1505 laser printer driver V8.01

Describe the issue: Printer does not print from Win 7 PC when connected to the DIR-655. Print jobs from another PC running XP will print successfully through Shareport. Printer also works fine when directly connected to the Win 7 PC. Win 7 PC can also access a USB stick plugged into the DIR-655 and read/copy files on the stick.

Describe the steps to reproduce the issue: Shareport shows the printer as active. When print is selected in an application Shareport connects and several activity lights flash on the printer indicating that it has been sent some data. However nothing is printed and lights stop flashing and go back to the normal ready to print status. The print job remains in the print queue with a status of printing. The job stays there for almost two minutes and then disappears. About 10 seconds later Shareport disconnects from the printer.

Strange thing is, I was able to get everything working properly for a short while when I first setup the router - printing and scanning both.  I've rebooted everything - router, printer, and computer but nothing prints anymore!

D-Link SharePort enabled Product Model: DIR-655

D-Link Product FW Version: 2.00NA , Wed, 12, May, 2010

Operating System being used: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

SharePort Version: 3.0.0 R1 (SXUPTP Driver: 3.3.8.0)

USB Product (Printer, Disk Drive, or other device) Model and Driver Version: Canon SELPHY 780 with Canon SELPHY CP Printer Driver for Windows 7 Version 4.0

Describe the issue: Printer works when directly connected to PC.  Does not work through SharePort.  SharePort recognizes the printer and can connect and disconnect manually and automatically.  When a file is sent to the printer, the paper feeds part way through the printer and then stops.  After about a minute an error message appears. "Error occurred during communication.  Check the printer power and printer connections."  Power and connections are good.

This is replacing a Netgear WNR3500. The DIR-655 worked right out of the box, simple setup. Excellent gigabit router and N/G wireless router. However, the USB shared port does not work as claimed. Called D-Link technical support 3 times. The first time I was asked to download the lastest version of the SharePort software, V3.0 (it came with V2.0). That did not fix the problem. The second time I called D-Link, I was told to contact the printer manufacturer to get help to configure the printer. I was told by the printer manfacturer that they weren't responsible for the router USB connection and suggested I call D-Link back (surprise!). On the third call to D-Link, I asked to speak with a supervisor who was somewhat helpful. He asked further, detailed questions leading us to reflash the firmware which also did not fix the problem. I am now in the RMA stage with D-Link and am to send them the unit at my expense while they send me another router. My system will be down in the mean time and they would like a credit card number - I'm not pleased about this! I may just return the product and get a refund unless someone knows how to fix this.

I bought this router because of its high ratings. This is a good router, both wired and wireless but the feature that attracted me to this (the shared USB port) does not work as claimed.

Describe the steps to reproduce the issue: I have tried this multiple times with the same result - It doesn't work.

Hi I am new here. I have a Model # dir-628  Hardware Version A2 Firmware version 1.24NA Shareport version 3.0.0 R1 (SXUPTP Driver : 3.3.8.0)  USB device Samsung Printer scx-4521f. Running 4 computers 1 -xp pro, 1 - xp mce, 2 - windows seven home.

I have had this router since early October and as a router it is fine it does what it is supposed to. As to the usb function I hate it and this is why I bought it so I could share my printer in the network without the basement computer having to be on. I passed the 30 days otherwise I would have returned it already. This shareport utility is nothing but trouble. It is constantly giving me the message that it did not disconnect properly and it just cycles through this endlessly. The only way out of this is to pull the power on the router. When a computer is connected to the router the printer works fine but it seems once I have connected to one computer and request the use of the printer by another computer it is the end of the sharing and I have to go and unplug the router and restart. When I first installed it I upgraded the firmware to the latest version and also the shareport utility to the latest version. I would like to be able to print at any time from any of my computers. Is this even remotely possible or are my expectations to high. Will I have the same problem when I connect a harddrive to this router?
Thanks.

D-Link SharePort enabled Product Model:  DIR-825 Hardware Version A1

D-Link Product FW Version:  1.13NA

Operating System being used:  7 Devices On Network

Wired Connection:
1.  PC:  Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit
2.  PC:  Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit

Wireless Connection:
1.  PC:  Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit (Wireless N 2.4 GHz Band)
2.  PC:  Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit (Wireless N 2.4 GHz Band)
4.  Printer:  Lexmark X7675 (Wireless G 2.4 GHz Band)

SharePort Version:  3.0.0 R1

USB Product Model and Driver Version:
Western Digital 2TB MY BOOK ELEMENTS EXTERNAL HD - WEWDBAAU0020

Describe the issue:

Each PC is capable of accessing the Western Digital hard drive.  However, when any PC has disconnected from the hard drive, neither that PC nor any other can reconnect.

When trying to reconnect after any PC has disconnected, the Shareport Utility will state "You are connected", but after about 45 seconds an error message will appear on the Windows task bar which states  "SHAREPORT UTILITY:  Western Digital Ext HDD 1021 did not disconnect properly", then the Shareport Utility will try to reconnect with the same results until you stop the process by clicking on the Shareport Utility "Disconnect" button when it is available.

To enable any PC to reconnect to the Western Digital hard drive, you must unplug the hard drive USB from the router, unplug the power from the router and the hard drive, then plug all back in.

Describe the steps to reproduce the issue:

Connect any PC to the Western Digital hard drive, then disconnect it, then try to reconnect to the hard drive on that or any other PC.

This issue appears similar to those posted by several other users in this forum.  I would greatly appreciate your assistance in resolving this issue.

Thank you.

I have 3 systems: Win XP (laptop), Win 7(desk top), Win 7(desk top) (each has Norton on it)

The D-Link router is DIR-628 with firmware level 1.25NA (2010/11/12)

I installed SharePort 3.0.0 on all 3 computers.

The USB external storage is a Maxtor OneTouch.

I can get to the Maxtor using SharePort from either of the Win 7 computers. (one at a time of course) And I can get to the Maxtor from the Win XP system ONLY until I re-boot the system. After I re-boot, I cannot connect unless I turn off Norton  Internet Security 11. After I re-boot the XP system, I can see when the Maxtor is connected to one of the other Win 7 systems (the little icon shows it is unavailable), AND I can even request that the other system release the Maxtor storage. But I cannot get connected to it.

I have uninstalled SharePort many times and re-installed it with no change. I have even re-installed NIS. No changes…

Any help would be appreciated – I really don’t want to re-install SharePort each time I want to use it on my laptop.

If this isn’t the right place, let me know where I should post to. Thanks

D-Link DAP-1350
Firmware Version : 1.11EU
Hardware Version : A1

My device is in router mode, check USB Setting and it in "Share Port" mode. Installed SharePort Utility Version 3.0.0 R1 (SXUPTP Driver: 3.3.8.0), both 32bit and 64bit in Windows XP and in Windows 7.

Is seems that no USB device is detecting. I am trying to share my USB harddrive, tried USB thumb drive though and not detected either.

Tried also using SX-Virtual Link version 3.6.2, this not working either.

Is there a way to check directly to the admin page if the Share Port is broadcasting or detecting that a USB device is plug in.

Please help.

well, now the SharePort Utility won't work on the 2 Windows 7 systems either (it used to work!!!)

so, i'm giving up on using external storage with SharePort and i'll recommend to anyone who asks NOT to buy a D-Link  - especially if they want to get to external storage from a network computer!!!

i've given up. now i'll do it the old fashioned way, a jump drive that i can carry around!

@astara:Did you try adding the SharePort as an exception on the Norton Internet Security?

Check the firewall information here:

To add the SharePort utility a firewall exception, make sure to add both the SharePort executable file, as well as the following network ports:

@hvykvy: Did you read here?: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=13283.0

Using Printers with SharePort

D-Link printers have a "Printer Autoconnect" feature allowing multiple users to share a printer, much like a print server, without the need to manually connect or disconnect. If you are having difficulties sharing a USB Printer with SharePort among multiple users on a network, you will want to make sure that the "Printer Autoconnect" feature is working properly. To configure this feature, please read the HELP documentation in SharePort by clicking on the '?' and click on 'How to Use a Printer' within the Help.

When the printer is not being used, it will show as 'Offline' on your computer (similar to having your USB cable disconnected). Don't worry, your printer is available, it's just not "connected". Once configured for Printer Autoconnect, when you Print, the SharePort Printer Autoconnect feature will automatically connect, then the job will print, then it will disconnect freeing the printer up for the next user.

If you are having difficulty with a printer, try making sure it prints when directly connected to your computer with the USB cable. Then make sure you have printer autoconnect set up correctly. You can do this by right-clicking on the printer in SharePort, going to 'Properties', then the 'Optional Settings' tab, then make sure there is a green checkmark and it says "Auto Printer Connect can be used". You can click on "Confirm" just to be certain and select the installed printer driver. If you are having difficulties with SharePort disconnecting before the printing is complete, it is because some printers try to hang on to the connection longer. You can increase the 'time before disconnecting after print job is sent'.

Thanks.

I have been struggling with the USB port out of the DIR-655 router and Shareport since 1/24/2011. I was under the impression I was only one with this problem. I just found the forum and looks like others have the same problem.

As a router the DIR-655 works as expected both wired and wireless. Very easy to setup.

For printing problem, D-Link Assigned - Case ID: C04634505

DIR-655 router - purchased from Amazon.com.
Installed and registered on 1/24/2010.
Part Number - BIR655ANA....B1
Serial Number - F35F5AB006749
Hardware version - B1
Firmware 2.0NA
Original Shareport Rev 2.0, since updated to Rev 3.0.

HOME NETWORK configuration:
Using a DLink DIR-655 router the Desk Top is running Windows XP SP3 and the Lap Top is running Win 7 SP1. The printer, HP PSC 2410V, is shared through the virtual USB port out of the router along with a control utility, SharePort , running on the Desk Top and the Lap Top. The Desk Top prints documents correctly. The Lap Top does not print documents correctly.

The printer is on port  USB001 of the Lap Top  which is the same port the Desk Top is using which works correctly.

From OUTLOOK the problem on the Lap Top manifests itself as follows:
1. The Lap Top (SharePort)  connects to the printer
2. “Banner” is printed
3. “From” line is printed
4. “Sent” line is printed
5.”To” line is printed
6.”Subject” line is printed
7. Printer is setting waiting for the body of the email.
8. After waiting several seconds ~ cancel the printer job at the printer.
9. Printer ejects page.
10. Approximately 2 minutes and 30 seconds later the Lap Top (SharePort) disconnects from the printer.

Email prints correctly from Desk Top.

If I print with the USB cable directly to the Lap Top the email is printed correctly.

I was told I needed IEEE 1284.4 support. Went through that suggestion to no avail. Updated drivers on both the Desk Top and the Lap Top.

As a test configured without a Firewall. No avall.

Desk Top continues to print documents correctly.

If I print a spread sheet (2 pages) from Xecel the problem from the Lap Top manifests itself as follows:
1. The Lap Top (SharePort)  connects to the printer
2. Prints 6 colums of 16 column and ejects page 2.
3. Prints 1.5 colums of 16 columns and ejects page 1.
4. The Lap Top (SharePort) disconnects from the printer.

Spread sheet prints correctly from Desk Top.

The USB port out of the router is the reason I selected the DIR-655 router. I bought my HP PSC 2410V printer in 1997 and it continues to print fine. No need to purchase a new printer.

As an alternative, to "share" the printer in the WIN 7 context, I would have to update the Desk Top to WIN7.

Follow up March 24, 2011:
Called Tech Support. Technician - Jeffery Estanislao.
Technical Support Case ID Assigned - C04762233:
After discussion with Tech Support the suggestion was I should contact my Lap Top manufacture and find out if there are any setings that need to be changed.
The answer was there are no settings for WIN 7.

Contacted Tech Support with follow up on March 25. Technician - Brenda Simmons.
Tech Support requested update of router (DIR-655) firmware from 2.00NA to 2.01NA.
Results: Print jobs manifested the same as a above.

As a followup experimnet Tech Support requested that I print directly from the Lap Top USB port.
Results - Word printed doc fine.
              Excel printed doc fine.
              Outlook printed email fine.
Conclusion: My theory is since the Desk Top (XP SP3) prints OK through the router using the SharePort utility, the Lap Top problem is because  the SharePort utility and WIN 7 are not compatible. Noting the difference between XP, 32 bit, and WIN 7 which is 64bit. Perhaps this is the issue? SharePort rev 3.1???

April 5, 2011
Called Tech Support. Followup to March 25, 2011. Technician Alice Nelson.

Reported the results (above) of the request from Tech Support. Printing directly from the Lap Top works as expected.

UPDATED SharePort from 3.0.1 to 3.1.0.
RESULTS on the Lap Top (WIN 7) is the SAME AS BEFORE.
1. SharePort connects to the printer.
2. Six to 8 lines are printed and the incomplete page is ejected.
3. Next page is the same as in step 2 until there are no more pages to print.
4. SharePort disconnects from the printer.

As requested by Tech Support, DISABLED the Firewall and Antivirus (Norton 360).
RESULTS are the SAME.

Tech Support indicated that the incomplete pages are caused by the Lap Top because there is a momentary disconnect to the printer (virtual USB port).
NOT CLEAR this is the problem. The Desk Top with XP SP3 does not show this as a problem.

It seems to me that the problem is between SharePort and WIN 7. The driver works correctly when the USB cable is directly to the Lap Top from the printer so it is not the driver.

Regards.

I would like to add information to this tread.

DIR-655, Hardware A4, Firmware  1.35NA

I own two PC's with Windows XP SP3 and a iMac 24" with OS x 10.6 installed.
I have a Canon Pixma Pro 9000 Mark II installed and connected to the shareport of my DIR-655 router (latest firmware installed)

When the Canon Pro9000 mkII is connected directly to either computer (mac, Pc etc) via USB everything prints flawlessly.

When It is connected through the shareport, it will only print 1/4 to 1/2 pages, then print the rest on the next page. Sometimes it will even waste 10 pages for a single 1-page document.

I have downloaded the latest D-Link shareport utility v3.0. No effect.
I also downloaded the utility from Silex America http://silexamerica.com/support/software/svl.html which is already at 3.6 btw, and again, no effect.

I would like to add that sometimes after rebooting the DIR-655 router, I will get a few printouts without problems. But after a few minutes/half hour, it will start to print half pages.

Some things to consider:
- It is NOT a Operating system issue, as I get the same effect from OSX and Win XP SP3. Considering other people experience this with Win7 & vista, it only confirms it.
- it is NOT a network connectivity issue, as my iMAC is connected through WiFi and my Pc's are connected through ethernet cables. Getting same problem from ALL computers.
- It is NOT a printer issue, as we can already see on this thread it affects printers from different brands.

My guess is that it IS a hardware/firmware issue with the router. Rebooting it will solve the problem temporarily. However for the life of me I cannot foresee myself rebooting the damn thing everytime i need to print!!

PLEASE D-LINK, can you issue a firmware upgrade that settles this issue for good? Just do a google search with "shareport prints half pages" and you will see we're not alone...

Thanks all, if anyone has a working solution PLEASE POST!!!

Hi Sesca,

This is my post :
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=37322.0
That I sent the 23th of february.

Hi,
I spent few hours with the guys of d-link to solve this problem and his final answer was: "I have no answer, sorry..."

Material: Dir-655 with shareport 3.0
2 ACER computers one with vista the other with Windows 7 x64
Printer: Brother DCP 7020

Installation on both computers of the network and sharport was problemless.
The printing on the "vista" computer via USB shareport system was ok.
But on the newest one, the "W7x64": the first attempt never give a print and the others give at most 1/4 of the first page (with a lot of blank pages or not)...Even if i close firewall and antivirus.
The direct connection of the computer with the printer (USB) work just fine.

On my first call, we reinstall everything and verify parameters and nothing change... So a "third level" technician call me back after few days.
We try to find an other driver for my printer because he said that it was a known issue with brother printer, and they found that there is a lake of "generic driver" with this printer. After hours of tests, nothing work and I still have the same problem.

I read a lot of stories on this forum and it seems to be a larger problem... Lexmark owner have the same problem, other x64 windows have the same problem too.

So if somebody somewhere have the answer I think that we are a LOT being interrested in.

If there is no one, I think that we bought a wireless device that need a wire... Congratulation... I don't no but if feel like a dumb...

Thanks

Do you have any news, informations to solve this problem. Thanks
Christophe

Do you have an hardware revision A or B ?

I found it on the Revision B but not in the Revision A download section.

I am looking for any and all feedback on SharePort 3.0. Keep the posts in this thread so that they are easier to track.

If you are having trouble with SharePort connecting be sure to list:

Router Model Number/Hardware Revision/Firmware Version
SharePort Version (should be 3.0)
USB Device that you are connecting to

D-Link SharePort enabled Product Model: DIR-825
D-Link Product FW Version: 1.13NA
Operating System: Win 7 32 and 64 bit
SharePort Version: 3.1.0 R1 (SXUPTP Driver : 3.4.6.0)
USB Product: Samsung CLP-310 Printer

Describe the issue: Shareport recognizes the printer only after resetting the DIR-825 router. I don't know if this is a Shareport issue or an issue with the DIR-825 disabling the USB port.

Describe the steps to reproduce the issue: PC restart. Use with 1 laptop and 1 desktop running Win 7 64-bit and 1 laptop running Win 7 32-bit. The desktop is connected directly to the router and the laptops connect wirelessly. All PCs work perfectly when the DIR-825 is reset.

Router-Dir-655
Firmware-1.34 na, 2010/04/16
Shareport-3.0.0R1 (SXUPTP Driver: 3.3.8.0)
Printer: HP 1210 All In One
Windows 7 64 bit

I connected my printer using the Shareport utility and i see my printer just fine. It also scans just fine.  The problem is when i print it stops half way and i get an error on the printer.

When i check the "print pending" icon on my laptop it says ink low. This is false as i have new ink cartridges. Also when i connect my laptop directly to the printer it prints just fine.

For what it's worth when i first connected the printer with the Shareport utility it loaded drivers for the printer. When i connected the printer directly to the laptop with a usb cord it reinstalled drivers but i assume this is due to me using a different port.

when i use a different laptop with xp and an older version of Shareport it works.

i think it has something to do with Shareport and windows 7 64 bit not getting along.

Router: DIR-655
Hardware Version: B1 - Firmware Version: 2.01NA
Shareport 3.1.0 R1 (SXUPTP Driver: 3.4.6.0)
Printer: Canon ImageClass MF3240
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Problem: Most the time the DIR-655 won't print all the page from the document. If I use Word with plain text, no image or chart, print 1-5 page(s), the printer will print. However, if I include some images or print more than 5 pages, then the printer stuck. Webpage also experiences the same thing. My printer can see the connection and indicates that it is printing but nothing is process. The
driver for this printer is not completely support for 64-bit, but I can plug directly into my laptop and still print correctly. Note that I set the interval for disconnect is at max value (300s). I guess there are might be some interrupt when printing large file. Why not Dlink allows more than 300s?

One more thing is sometime the DIR-655 will disconnect and reconnect, which does not recognize my printer. Not happen usual, but it might have something to do with the USB cable.

D-Link SharePort enabled Product Model:
DIR-825

D-Link Product FW Version:
1.13NA,  2010/01/21

Operating System being used (Windows XP?, Vista?, Win 7 32 or 64 bit, Mac OS 10.5 or 10.6, etc) including any Service Packs or 32/64 bit information:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit Service Pack 1

SharePort Version:
3.1.0 R1 (SXUPTP Driver : 3.4.6.0)

USB Product (Printer, Disk Drive, or other device) Model and Driver Version:
Canon PIXMA MP-600

Describe the issue:
When trying to connect to the printer using the SharePort utility, the utility will somtimes go in an infinite loop try to connect and disconnect the printer. It first tries to connect which takes ~15 seconds (much longer than normal) then it turns the icon green saying it successfully connected, then it immediate disconnects the devices with an error message saying "Canon printer failed to disconnect properly", then it goes back trying to connect and the same thing keeps happening over and over again. The only solution is to reboot the router. After that it connects perfectly and stays connected. After a few days, you get the same problem again and you have to reboot the router.

Describe the steps to reproduce the issue:
1. Reboot the router
2. Connect the printer to the router
3. Run SharePort on your PC
4. Connect to the printer using SharePort
5. Wait a few days, the printer will be disconnected
6. Try connecting again
Expected: it connects
Actual: it goes into an infinite connect/disconnect loop.

Router Model Number/Hardware Revision/Firmware Version: not Router, instead DNS-323/v4/1.0.9
SharePort Version (should be 3.0): 3.0.0 R1 (SXUPTP Driver: 3.3.8.0)
USB Device that you are connecting to: Brother DCP-7030 MFP
OS: Windows XP SP3

Problem: Printing works great.
Scanning: Scanning applications recognize the scanner (connected, listed in "Scanner and Cammeras, etc), but can't get it actually work.

Disabled firewall on router and OS, didn't help

I can provide a network trace if you like

This is the best solution I have seen for dlink's shareport.  SX Virtual Link is the way to go.

This is the best solution I have seen for dlink's shareport.  SX Virtual Link is the way to go.

Funny that you would say that now. Silex is no longer hosting Virtual Link 3.4.0. It's a 404. Their current version is 3.6.2 from 12/19/10. Has anyone tested that?

So I tried it with Silex 3.6.2, and DIR-655 on 1.33NA, on my Win 7 laptop, firewall exceptions applied at installation. Tried connecting to a USB hard drive. Now the Silex SW is repeatedly connecting and disconnecting every 10 seconds.
Oops, forgot it works better when you reboot the router. So far, so good.

Might be a keeper after all.

Not two days later, although Silex says connected, it will only stay connected for less than a minute and even when it is connected, it no longer recognizes the USB drive I have connected to it.

I have 2 routers DIR 655 and DIR 825 in different places but I use my laptop in both places. I installed Shareport for the 825 and it works fine. I seem to be unable to install Shareport for the 655. It just doesn't seem to load. The Shareport that I installed for the 825 does not recognize any devices on the 625 network. A desktop on the 625 network has no problem seeing the printer.
Are Shareports for the 2 different routers not different and not compatible.

Using DIR-655 FW 1.35NA HW A4, Shareport 3.0.0 R1
Windows 7 64
Trying to use USB port with WD Passport 1TB HD.
Shareport can connect with drive no problems now but I cannot access the drive at all.
Was prompted to format drive which I did but still no luck.
Shows up as Local Disk H but the My Computer window will eventually lockup.
Also noticed since installing Sharport My Network window takes forever to display any content if it even does before locking up.
Have tried turning off Windows firewall which improved Sharports ability to connect to drive but it is still totally useless.
Shareport can never disconnect from the drive so I always have to force shutdown.
Love the router but Shareport is total crap.  The Netgear solution ReadyShare is much better, does not require a client to be installed and has no impact to system performance.

D-Link SharePort enabled Product Model:

D-Link SharePort enabled Product Model: DIR-632

D-Link Product FW Version: 1.01NA

Operating System being used (Windows XP?, Vista?, Win 7 32 or 64 bit, Mac OS 10.5 or 10.6, etc) including any Service Packs or 32/64 bit information: Win 7 64-bit SP 1 (2 systems)

SharePort Version:  v3.0.0 R1

USB Product (Printer, Disk Drive, or other device) Model and Driver Version:  Western Digital 2TB external USB 2.0/3.0 MyBook

Describe the issue: Transferred to/from the drive is slow as molasses in January flowing uphill -- usually in the range of 500-800 kB/s; occurs both on wired and wireless connections; intermittent disconnections from the drive from both systems; intermittent non-detection of drive.

Describe the steps to reproduce the issue: Reset router, shut off wireless and tested with single wired connection, disconnected uplink to ISP, reinstalled SharePoint -- no change whatsoever.  Direct USB connection to system results in 20+ MB/sec transfers.

Following earlier advice in this thread, I just installed SX Virtual Link v3.6.2 and giving it a whirl to see if it's the fault of the SharePort utility, or whether the USB port on the router is **** (my bet).

Seriously D-Link, get it together.

Well, after switching to SX Virtual Link, I'm now getting transfer speeds in the 4.0-4.5 MB/sec range on wired and 2.0-2.5 MB/sec on wireless.  Still having intermittent connection problems when on wireless.

So, it looks like SharePort was a good portion of the problem but the USB connection is still far from ideal.

Any ideas when an appropriate firmware revision might be coming out?

I have a DIR-655, Rev. B, FW 2.03NA, Sharepoint 3.0, a WD My Book Essential 1110 (1 TB USB drive) and Win7 32 bit. When I first connected the drive to Shareport, it worked perfectly. I was even able to run backups over wireless. Suddenly, I can connect to the drive and it appears in Windows Explorer. I can read the drive, but I cannot write to it except to create directories in Windows Explorer. Attempting to copy files just results in Explorer giving me a box that says "Calculating" for the time remaining, file sizes and transfer rate.

I connected the drive directly to two of my computers and it worked perfectly on each. However, it no longer works on the Starepoint with either wired or wireless connections. I uninstalled Sharepoint and reinstalled it, but that had no effect. I have rebooted the router which makes no difference. Sharepoint is excepted in the Windows Firewall on all machines.

Since the drive works perfectly while connected directly to the computers, I believe that the problem must either be in the software or the router, but I can't determine which.

I have a DIR-655 that I connected a Seagate external HDD to using a USB cable. The drive shows in Shareport on my MAC but not as a drive in Finder. I have the HDD partitioned NTFS and Mac Journalled. Do I need to format a partition as FAT 32 to get it to show on my Mac? I updated the firmware and Shareport is installed, obviously. I tried the advice on the D-Link support to uncheck "Automatically connect this drive when it is available" in Properties but it made no difference. MB Pro OSX 10.6.8. (It works fine in Windows.)

For Mac, it needs to be either FAT 32 or NTFS.
