Title: HTPC locking up when accessing files from the NAS
Post by: mikevets on March 24, 2010, 06:24:08 PM
I have had an ongoing issue with Media Centre ever since I started using my NAS and hoping someone can help. When accessing (playing/copying/moving) files from my NAS, Media Centre will occasionally just lock up. Only way to get out of it is to shut the system down and restart.
I played around last night and tried playing a file from the NAS in VLC player - it kept pausing the file as it was buffering. I would have expected it to be instantaneous... any help with this would be appreciated.

What Media center are you running?   Microsoft or perhaps BeyondTV       Guessing Microsoft media Center,  which version though XP, Vista, 7?

Lock ups could also be the result of the Video Codec install so if you could provide details about what you've got.

Hmmm,   well basically the same setup i'm using.

How is your media center connected to your NAS? (UTP or Wireless? ,   Speed?,  switches?)  If you were to copy down a large file (1 GB +),  what transfer speed are you getting?

Have you tried copying some files down to your MC HD  to see if its still locking up when playback is local?

Hi, currently away on business but will investigate further tomorrow night. NAS is wired and can't remember transfer speeds of the top of my head. The lockups don't only happen when copying/transferring files. Also happens during playback occassionally. Typically it is when I pause something then go back to resume... makes an awful noise and like I said, need to shut down the entire system.
