Title: setting a login password to the wireless network?
Post by: kenora on March 28, 2010, 06:50:58 AM
First of all I am a total noob at computers and wireless in particular so forgive the following question...fwiw I searched and found nothing specific for my issue.

When I travel with my laptop I have to get a code from the front desk to log onto hotel wireless networks, when I go to a coffee shop or library with a hot spot the wireless network is open to all.

Consequently when I bought my DIR-655 (hardware A3 firmware 1.10) I "assumed" there would be somewhere in the set-up where I would be asked to create a password that every wireless device would have to enter to log on.

Well that wasn't the case and it seems my home network is open to the world. I periodically check the router and see several freeloaders and I would like to change that.

So question is... how do I add that password,

Thanks and I hope to hear back.

You need to setup security and change the network name (SSID).

Go into the router setup pages then click on Setup > Wireless Settings

Scroll page down and click on Manual Wireless Network Setup

Now change the SSID and setup a security key.

After doing this you will need to also setup your wireless clients with this same info.

well I am embarrassed to say it is working and it was easy. ::)

Thanks a million.

There are toooooooooo many things to know and too many variables when it comes to this router. I am just a home user and am very pleased to have it "working as advertised"

Great site...thanks again. :)
