Title: Multiple wireless router setup question
Post by: JimMonz on March 29, 2010, 12:03:25 PM
Does anyone see a problem with multiple routers in the home?

This is what I plan to do tonite:

Cable   <-> LinkSys Wireless-G <-> DIR-655 wireless-N <-> (2 wired desktops)
modem       router                        router

This would give me:
1. Gigabit between the desktops.
2. Wireless G or N for my laptop (I know the DIR-655 does G)
3. Maybe laptop on network if I'm on DIR-655?

This is so when I suffer from loss of internet on the DIR-655, I might be able to connect with the LinkSys.

Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Got a DIR-855 and a DIR-655 running simultaniously.  No problem, but see that you don't put them on the same channel.  That will slow down the routers.
I use the DIR-855 on WPA2 only, because it has to serve my pc's for work.  My son's PSP that need to use WPA instead of WPA2 and visitors, I don't want to have on my segment are kept out on the DIR-655.

Jim,

I'd like to put my sons on my WRT54GS in WEP for their DSiXL (older games they still play are WEP only) and my stuff on the DIR-655 with WPA2. Is there a way to do that with just one cable modem ie: you connect the two routers via ethernet and config the rest? Or are you using two DSL/Cable modems?

This is what I'd like to do:

Cable Modem <-> DIR-655 wireless-N <-> (1 wired desktop, 1 wireless desktop, 1 mini laptop, 1 regular laptop, 2 PS3's using PS3 Media Server, LED TV with wireless adaptor for DLNA, iPod Touch wi-fi)  <-> LinkSys Wireless-B/G  <-> 2 DSiXL's running WEP.

Anyone have a link for what I'm looking at?

I haven't had time to try it, yet, but I don't think it'll matter which router comes first.

My plan is to:

1. Connect LinkSys (I think WRT54G) WAN/Internet to cable modem.
2. Connect DIR-655 WAN/Internet to a LinkSys LAN port (100 MBit).
3. Connect 2 wired desktops to DIR-655 LAN (gigabit).

blenchi,
   I'm assuming auto channel selection should work?

knild556,
    be sure to have some type of hard line access to each router for setup. I have 2 gigabit ethernet ports on my desktop and I plan to connect one to each. I will only enable the one to the LinkSys (and disable the one to the DIR-655) when I need to mess with its setup. Otherwise the DIR-655 port will always be enabled.
