Title: Firmware 3.05 and secure spot activation
Post by: kevm on February 15, 2008, 07:33:54 AM
Has anyone upgraded to 3.05 and activated secure spot? Have you used the thin client? Do you use it with other antispyware and antivirus installed?

I think D link should allow an upgrade to 3.05 and above without the secure spot services activated if the customer wishes not to use the service

I am asking these questions of the group, because I am not now, nor have I ever been a big fan of McAfee products.

I am curious if it works well.

All feedback appreciated

I have a few questions about the SecureSpot services:

1.  Why should I active them?
2.  Do I have to buy anything?
3.  If there is a free "package", what does it include?
4.  If there isn't a free "package", does this mean I absolutely have to buy an "upgrade" to the services?

What I want to know is, if I decide to upgrade to 3.05 and activate the SecureSpot services, do I need to pay?  If not, what functionality do I get?

It's a Security suite.  Of course you're going to pay. I believe there is a 30 day trial.

If in fact there is a charge for supposedly "upgrading" to 3.05, it should be spelled out specifically in the d/l instructions. I reviewed and installed 3.04 last night, however, saw nothing mentioned regarding a fee for 3.05. I too am not a big fan of McAfee products, and don't see myself paying for a service that I really don't want. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I can explain exactly what the 3.05 upgrade does.....if in fact performance issues are tied directly into this upgrade, and the user must d/l this "security suite" as well to get the performance updates, this is really "dirty pool" on the D-Link company's part.  However, if I'm in error and the performace upgrades are available WITHOUT being required to either d/l or pay for the "security suite" portion of the 3.05 upgrade, I apologise in advance.

If you dont' activate the Secure Spot software then there is no charge. 3.05 does not force the user to use the suite, just allows for it.
