Title: Shareport Connect/Release Issue
Post by: joe254 on April 01, 2010, 09:28:04 AM
Does anyone else find it extremely frustrating that a device must be released before another PC can use it?  This requirement SEVERELY limits it's usefulness.  If nobody is present at the PC which is currently using the USB device to release it, then every other PC on the networked is locked out from using it.

I am using DIR 655 router FW 1.21 and Shareport v1.15.

I agree completely. I finally installed Shareport on my DIR-628 so I could share my USB external HDD for backups. Since my computers are on different floors of my house, it's a royal pain to have to run up & down the stairs to access it. I've dropped a message to D-Link support about this.

What I do

1. Start Shareport on one PC.
2. Connect to the External HD from the PC with Shareport.
3. Share the drive in Windows.

The only negative thing I have found is that the PC with Shareport and the connection must not go into sleep mode.

This could also work for sharing a printer.

The other option, with an external HD or printer, is to just hook it directly to one PC and share it. This eliminates the need for Shareport completely.

If you are really serious about LAN networking, you just need to invest in some dedicated equipement, like a printserver or a NAS. Getting shared LAN devices through something like Shareport is like entering Formula 1 with a Porsche. Shareport is just the most basic means of getting shared connectivity, a router has and will only have one main task: routing .
