Check to make sure your 802.11 choice of connections includes 802.11g if it's g, Channel Width should be Auto 20/40 also. Access them in Setup>Wireless Settings>Manual setup. Yes they should communicate.

Is there any encryption being used? If so, whats the result of disabling the encryption?

They should communicate. Make sure encryption is off (initially)and the wireless radio is on. Also make sure the router is broadcasting(initially).
