Ok, so i just got my dns-323 and just had a few questions.
from reading up on a few posts i understand that the FTP access and transfer may not be 100% encrypted past the user name and password.
however, i'm not too sure on how to actually access files on the Nas from a remote machine or internet.
so basically im looking for a few quick pointers on how to get connected remotely.
do you use an ie/firefox window, or use an FTP client like filezilla.
if my Nas name is dlink-123456, how would i configure whatever i need to do.
sorry to sound like a complete tool here, but i'm eager to learnand get the most from my device.

Regular FTP is not encrypted at all. That is why there is there is secure FTP (FTPS).
When you say remotely do you mean inside or outside your local network? If you are trying to to access your FTP server from outside your local network, you will have to forward the proper ports (21) in your router to the local IP of your NAS. You then direct your FTP client to the external IP of your router (this is the IP that is given to your router from your ISP.)
You will also have to set up groups in your FTP server configuration on the DNS admin page.
The best way to start is to try and log on to your FTP server from inside your local network first. After you can do that, then you can work towards getting it setup for external use.

Yes i do mean from outside my own network.
I've setup a single user account on the NAS and started the FTP server itself.
I've also been able to connect within my local network using ftp through IE and by using Filezilla.
One of the tech guys in work has suggested setting up a Dyn-DNS account to do some of the work for me, which i've done, but so far have configured the IP address (my own internal NAS IP rather than the routers presentation IP)wrong and cant change till later.
Tomorrow he's going to help me log into my PC from work to see if we can fine tune the settings directly.
It looks like i'm getting there but not quite just yet.
Just need to reconfigure (if possible) for sFTP and hope that d-link plug sort out the encryption issue.
Any further advice, please keep it coming.

Got it sorted now thanks.
Slight issue with port forwarding apparently.
Also had trouble testing it from work, but that was just because our office firewall wouldnt let me out.
