Title: Fan noise (yeah, I know)
Post by: mkelley on April 28, 2010, 03:23:37 PM
Okay, after doing some research here I see that my 321 is not unique in having a horrible fan noise that never stops (much louder than even my i7 monster of a box that has four drives running in it).  Before I return this (because it really is unacceptable -- there isn't anywhere I can think of I could put this thing where the noise wouldn't drive someone crazy) has there been any official "fix" for this with the new firmware?

I probably should have visited these forums before I bought it (luckily Amazon is good about returns) and I'm still confused now about what I should do (because otherwise I really like it -- it works perfectly with the exception of this "wind tunnel") but I'm surprised this hasn't been a deal breaker for D-Link before this (since this obviously has been a problem with this unit for years).

My fan on the DNS-321 with the 1.03 firmware works properly, and as long as the unit is reasonably cool, the fan dead silent.

So maybe it's just because I'm writing a lot of data right now?

I had thought for sure *you* were one of the ones complaining about the fan noise (but maybe I mixed you up with somebody else -- there were a ton of threads and a lot of complaints to read through).  I did notice there is a power setting for the drives (I left it at the default of five minutes) so maybe after they power down the unit will cool off and the fan will go off (like I said, I'm writing a ton right now because I'm trying to set this up as my media drive.  I won't actually know for about two days, there's that much data).

Other than that I really like this unit but the fan noise (if always on) will drive me crazy (well, crazier).

Okay, just to close this off, after I copied a ton of stuff to my drive (and the drives finally powered down) the fan turned off just fine, so I'm okay with it.

A really nice unit, can't beat the price (particularly right now, when it's under $100)

So, the fan is doing what it's supposed to, cool the unit. :D

FWIW, I modified the case on both my DNS-321 and DNS-323 for better intake vents, they really don't have any airflow as they come from the factory.  Somewhere in these forums, I posted pictures of my modifications.

Here's the DNS-323 picture, the DNS-321 was similar but I left the material in the middle due to the construction of the case and just had two vents, one on each side.  This dropped the temperatures at least 5C for the boxes.
