Title: FTP constantly asking me to log in
Post by: oscar on May 02, 2010, 11:33:22 PM
Howdy guys and gals.  It seems like I've spent all day getting geeked out learning how to set this thing up and just as i gave up right before I'm going to bed I get this to work.  The only thing i see now that is an issue is that once i log in and I click on a MP3 or video file for it to download, as soon as I come back to the directory it asks me to log in again even if it was just 5 seconds ago that i executed something.  I have my FTP idle time set to ten minutes, is there something else I'm forgetting about here or is this normal?  This is my first time setting up an FTP let alone FTP into anything.  Thanks

Oscar-

Are you accessing the box on your local network? If so I'm not sure why you would want to use FTP in the first place...

If not, what FTP program are you using?

Well i was just trying to test out the FTP so i read a few threads on here that said test on your network first.

I think i figured out it was firefox that was causing this issue because when I go to FTP://myip on IE it was ok.  I did encounter another problem though.  I attempted to FTP in from outside my network and it would time out.  I can ping the IP address though so im not sure again what im doing wrong here.

What FTP programs should i start looking into and what is the benefit from going through a browser and these applications?  Thanks again guys.

Programs like FileZilla offer far more functionality than using Windows Explorer or a browser. In my experience they are usually quicker and more stable too.

To FTP to your NAS from outside, you'll need to open the FTP port on your firewall and have it forward the requests to the IP and FTP port of your NAS. Standard FTP is port 21.

I'll download file zilla when i get home.  So i guess it makes sence, my FTP test worked because i was within my network right?  The thing is i read up on port forwarding (opening ports) and it looked cut and dry for the linksys. http://www.wikihow.com/Port-Forward/Open-Ports-on-a-Linksys-Router (http://www.wikihow.com/Port-Forward/Open-Ports-on-a-Linksys-Router)

Only different thing i do is on step 6 i enter my NAS ip address.  I save it and it tells me that changes have been saved but when i go to test port 21 http://canyouseeme.org/ (http://canyouseeme.org/) it tells me they are all blocked even 21.  Im thinking my router is done because it is old, even linksys said they can't support me because its out of warranty.  when i get home i'm going to hit the reset button on that thing and start from scratch.  Any sugestions at this point?

Yep. It won't work otherwise. Your router needs to know what to do with a request for port 21 access.

You might need to read up a bit more on your specific router or post in forums for that.
