Title: DIR-655 Shareport - All's Well Now?
Post by: klaus on May 07, 2010, 05:27:13 AM
Hey, it looks like the traffic has really died down on this topic.
Did everyone get their DIR-655 Shareport to work properly with their printers?
(Shareport 3.0 with FW 1.33?)

Not me....at least with Win 7 X64....

Tho my new little print server is working fine.... only thing I lose is no ink level data back from the printer; worth the tradeoff for the stability.

If they ever get Shareport working properly for X64, maybe I'll try it again....

Hmmm, are you using a home network, and did you plug your print server into a desktop host for that network, and you can print wirelessly that way?

Reason I ask is cuz I haven't unpackaged my DIR-655 yet.  I've heard it's a good router, but the Shareport just don't work...and that's a selling 'feature' for us.  If you're successfully printing wirelessly, via home network, with a print server, maybe I'll take the plunge with the DIR-655 and get me a printer server too.  :-\

Hi,

The little USB to Ethernet print server I got http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190375137766&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190375137766&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT) is a tidy little package.  I did a Make Offer for $25 and he accepted it....

You plug an ethernet cable into it from your router, and plug the USB cable (from the printer) into the other port, then plug the power brick in to it and the wall power.

It came with a little disk to install some software to facilitate its set up.  Then you set the printer driver up to use the IP port/print server software port and pretty much you are done....

I set mine up to use a fixed LAN IP address rather than the print server soft-port (as I call it).  The only functionality I lost is the printer ink level report that pops up, altho some of the better print server boxes supposedly can handle that software aspect as well (full bi-directionality)....

I also Use Win 7 x64.....Shareport 3.0 did not work for me....I purchased a Netgear WPGS606 Wireless Print Server with two USB ports (print server only) and four 10/100 Lan Ports so I can tether a PC or other ethernet device to it, and use it as a wirelesss bridge to my router at G speed.
I purchased off eBay for some $20.00 plus change and shipping.
Downloaded latest drivers & setup CD (you need this to make life easy)
Works well with my D-Link 655 and also with a Netgear 3700 router.
I have two Printers connected to it...it will not pass current Ink level info, but all other printer options work on all PCs on my network. I can access it's GUI from my network.
For N speeds, there are other options, all more costly. (printers do not need N speeds)
