Title: Help: Format Required after 1.08 upgrade? PLEASE NO!
Post by: stevenzissou on May 12, 2010, 01:30:37 AM
I just upgraded from 1.06 to 1.08. I have two 1.5TB drives that are full of data and had been working perfectly with the device in 1.06. After the 1.08 upgrade which went smoothly the DNS-323 is recognizing Volume 1 but is requesting that I format the other disk. I really can't afford to lose this data. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank  you!

Hi there

First thing to do is to make sure you have a backup of your data. Remove the disk(s) with important data on and attach it to a SATA connector in a PC, or USB/SATA drive enclosure, or USB/SATA cable and in Windows install a Linux filesystem driver (http://www.fs-driver.org/) to mount your disks as read-only and access the files.

Is your NAS setup using RAID1 or do both drives contain different data?

Once your data is safely backed up, you could try resetting the NAS back to factory defaults and re-seating the drives after a power off.

Select skip then reset the unit to factory defaults.

FWIW, I believe that I'm pretty safe in stating that it's a pretty universal requirement for this box to reset to defaults after a firmware upgrade to insure proper operation.  Apparently, things in the config map more around between firmware releases.
