OK this is really killing me. I just bought a DIR-655 and it has firmware 1.33NA. On my previous Linksys routers, I am able to ping and connect to my other computers on my LAN via the name. I decide to replace my Linksys with a DIR-655.
Now, no matter what settings I change in Setup->Network Settings DHCP Settings area, I can't ping nor connect to any local LAN computers via name. In fact, anytime I ping a computer by name, the ping attaches my ISP's name to the end of it.
So if I ping Computer1 instead of going to Computer1 it pings Computer1.wow-way.com
I can ping Computer1 via IP and connect to it via IP but I can't do it via name
Anyone, anyone have settings that can enable this? I've tried enabling NetBIOS announcement and setting the primary WINS server to the IP of the DIR-655 and the various hybrid, mixed mode, point to point..etc.
This issue's driving me crazy.. along with an issue of my Windows Media Center not being able to find my Xbox 360 using the DIR-655 but I'll save that for later.

I recommend going into network settings area for each of your systems network cards and telling the system (network cards memory) to "FORGET" the network and then reboot each respective system. In fact, if it were me, I would do each of the systems while the others were off. In other words, beginning with ALL but one of them off, following the steps above, then turn another one on and follow the same procedure until you do it to all of them. To save time and to see if it works though, test it out on the first system you do it on before you go through it all on all of them. This is the procedure that I use every single time I have to change my router. This is the easiest way to prevent problems while retaining your SSID information (information you're probably already used to and possibly have written down for future use). Even if you don't want to retain this, it is still the best way (IMHO) of preventing problems when it becomes necessary to switch routers, as it clears all of your NIC's caches.
ADDITION: I forgot to mention here that I've been able to successfully ping using computer names, although I normally don't do that, I usually use the LAN side IP addresses - 192.168.0.252 ... etc. I did not "intentionally" change any router settings to accomplish this, so if there is a need for that, then I totally stumbled onto it without even realizing it.

I believe the name convention is handled thru NetBIOS settings, which typically in the DIR-655 are turned off....
Personally I use local IP addys to make those connections except for Windows 7 Networking login type of things.... But I also have every PC on my LAN using a reserved Local IP so I can remember just by the IP who is who...Printers too....

Thanks, I'll try out the suggestion of resetting all the computers.. Although now my 360 can see my media center so I dunno if I want to chance it :)

I have noticed that after turning on netbios in the router settings and then going to the sytem page and using the ping test tool there, the router resolves names to an external ip addres, such as 64.89.89.124. It appears that this router is unable to re-brodcast names out to the network.
