I am trying to set up the email notification on the DNS-323. I called our ISP and they do require authentication. I have set up my email username and password several different ways such as username and username@isp.com but when I attempt to test I just get a message that says the email test failed. There is no additional information. Is there a log file I can check or does anybody have a suggestion for a troubleshooting process that I can go through?
My ISP does not require Secure connection via SSL or any other way. The email account is a standard pop3/smtp. I have the mail server name correct.
Thanks in advance

The email user name is entered as <username>, the sender & receiver emails are entered as <username@isp.com> - for this to function, the DNS-323's LAN settings must be correctly entered including DNS & gateway.

I have verified the settings. Everything is set correctly. When I try a test message I get a pop up box that says the test message failed. Is there a way to analyze this more? Is there a log? What steps can i take to troubleshoot this problem?

I just setup email notifications on 1.04 firmware in our test lab and I AM receiving the email when I click test as well as a successful message. There is no log file available on the DNS-323. You can PM me your settings(minus your password) and I can tell you if I see anything wrong.

Can I attach an image?

Here is how the Email is configured:
Login Method: Account
Username: ayhch
Password: xxxxxxxx
SMTP Server: smtp.telus.net
Sender Email: dns323@telus.net
Receiver Email: don@myemail.com
Not for the Sender email I have tried about 5 different things including the ayhch account which fully qualified is ayhch@telus.net. I have talked to our ISP and they say that they do not accept anonymous requests.

A dumb question... Did you already tried this configuration on a mail program to see if it works?
For example, maybe your password is wrong? Or maybe your username is wrong?
I know this sounds stupid, but, for example, on my ISP, the username is always something like bla@bla.com...
I can also confirm on my unit email is working... So it's clearly not a DNS-323 problem.

I agree with the user above. Have you tried these exact settings in a mail client Like outlook? Did you verify with Telus that they are using standard SMTP port 25 for outgoing and no Encrypted authentication?

I use this email every day. I know what the password is and I know how the ISP configures it. my username is username not username@isp.com although I did try that. My frustration is that the 323 simply says Test failure. Gee thanks for an informative answer. I have used this ISP for 10 years. Yes they use port 25 for smtp and no authentication or SSL.
How can I prove that the problem is not the 323? I tried this scenario on on firmware 1.03 and 1.04.

The idea of pinging from the 323 makes sense. I don't know if I can telnet to the 323. I will try in a few hours and see if I can figure out how. I don't know if I will need an account to telnet to the 323.

I think your problem is with the "Sender Email"
It should be your exact email address of that account and not dns323@xxx
edit, well after writing this i tried it on mine, changed my sender email to DNS323@xxxx.ca and the test email came through okay. so maybe its not your issue but i would still try it.

Login Method : Account
User Name : ayhch@telus.net
Password : xxxxxxxx
SMTP Server : smtp.telus.net
Sender E-mail : ayhch@telus.net
Receiver E-mail : dbrwc@telus.net
The above results on a test fail. I also set the account as ayhch which is the way that telus sez to configure your account name in OE or Outlook.
Is there a way that I can telnet to the DNS? Then I could ping the smtp server on port 25 to verify.

Post what you have as LAN settings - those settings can also cause problems sending email

Yes. If you have verified the settings in a 3rd party mail client and they are working correctly it is very possible that your DNS-323 DNS settings are incorrect and it can not resolve the mailserver at telus. Please post All lan settings including DNS settings.

I was having trouble getting email alerts to work on DNS-323 with firmware 1.08. I tried all the suggestions above with to and from emails the same, and using ISP email etc. None worked.
However, then I used the IP address for my mail server - SUCCESS!

I've ran into a similar issue last week. It wasn't the 323 but the settings on my mail server that caused the issue. as I discovered by checking the mail server logs.
To the OP, any chance you can get a look at the mail server logs to see why the connect failed? It will probably go a long way into pointing you in the right direction.
