Title: 2TB Drives
Post by: Sumdumphuc on June 14, 2010, 11:18:31 PM
I have read the compatibility list. Here (ftp://files.dlink.com.au/products/DNS-343/REV_A/SetupGuides)
and have read the post Here (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=12978.0)
I have also read this post Here (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=12606.0)

My Problem is I would like to use 2TB drives in my DNS-343 and DNS-323's and the only 2TB drive that is on the compatibility list is discontinued (WD20EADS) and impossible to get in Australia now.

Is there an updated list with more 2TB drives that are supported by Dlink?

Do any other 2TB drives work with both the DNS-343 and DNS-323?

Is there anyone else running 2TB drives that are not on the list and have had no problems with?

and finally is it becoming common with the new firmware to get the WD20EARS drives working? (I will only be running them as single drives no raid)

Thanks,

If you're looking to add 2 TB HDDs to your DNS-343 without RAID (i.e. using standard configuration), I am personally using the Seagate Barracuda LP ST32000542AS in my two DNS-343s.  Both DNS-343s are in standard configuration and each DNS-343 contains 4 of these drives.  I've been using these 2 TB drives for at least 7 months without any issue.  If I had to purchase new HDDs today, I would probably purchase lower power versions of these drives.  Although slow for some users,  the 5900 RPM spin-rate suits my purposes.

I'm not 100% sure, but from my understanding, the HDD limitations in the DNS-343 for 2 TB HDDs is limited to RAID configurations.  You'll have to have someone else in this forum validate this.

I have the following 2Tb hard drives in multiple DNS-343's on RAID 5 with no problems.
WD - WD20EARS
Hitachi - HDS722020ALA330
Seagate - ST32000542AS
WD - WD20EADS
Samsung - HD203WI

Thanks for the comments. I went out and bought 2x WD20EARS, so far so good.....

There should be a sticky topic with what drives people have working on their DNS-343, not just D-link supported drives.

I'm not so sure D-Link would endorse a sticky topic on that subject, since they haven't tested the drives themselves and can't validate the results.  D-Link would have to include a hefty disclaimer up front.

I hope everyone here is grown up enough to know these comments do not reflect the approved drives that D-Link supports. If you didn't know, you do now. Use other drives at your own risk!

In the D-link DNS-323 forums they have such a sticky topic. here (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=672.0)

Though it does not have any 2TB drives in it other than the WD20EADS D-link supported drive.

I will also now try a WD20EARS in one of my DNS-323 and see how it goes.

Over here (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=12977.0) there is specific discussion about compatability of the WD EARS series drives in RAID arrays and NAS devices generally.

I assume this would have similar impact on the 343 ?

I have 1 of my DNS343 running with 4 x Seagate Barracuda LP ST32000542AS 2TB drives for the past 6 months, running in RAID 5, and have NO issues.  fw: 1.04Beta.  They work flawlesly.

In another unit I had some WD WD20EADS drives a while back in RAID 5, and they worked fine.  But not too long ago, I got a few more, and in RAID, they were useless...  Transfer rates dropped 10fold, and they would even timeout occasionally.  Thought maybe it was some firmware issue, so I tried the drives in my QNAP TS409Pro, and my Synology DS508 and they were still useless.  In Non-Raid, they each seemed to work perfectly, but as soon as they were in some raid config, they crawled.  I eventually replaced them with some 1TB Seagate ES.2 drives I had lying around, and the unit is working fine for now.

WD20EARS can be made to work if you manually align the partitions, but I can't be bothered.. Especially if a drive dies, the last thing I need is to have to worry about realigning before rebuilding.. If it is not supported in default firmware, I would not use them.

I just set up one using Hitachi 2tb drives with no problem.  They do not have 4k sectors and are 7200 rpm if that makes a difference. I keep hearing problems with raid and 4k sectors.
