Title: Unit disapears from network.
Post by: jcastillo81 on June 26, 2010, 06:47:10 PM
I just purchased this unit a few days ago and have not been able to get it to stay connected to my network.  I reset it to factory defaults and went through the installation process again and was able to stay connected long enough to copy all of my music (which took several hours overnight).  But basically as soon as that was finished and I tried to connect to it via iTunes, it disappeared from my network and whenever I click on the drive I get this message: "\\Drivename\web_page is not accessible. You might not have permission to use the network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.  No network provider accepted the given network path."  I did set up a user and password but it doesn't ask for that info.

I cannot connect with any computer or gaming device.  I CAN ping it.  I am confused.  Help please.

Thank you.

Equipment:
Win XP (hardwired to the router)
D-link router
Seagate hard drive

the "web_page" is not actually a drive - it's basically a link to your dns-321's config ui page (however, your ip address for your dns-321 could be changing)

what you need to do:

first, is basically a good idea to assign or reserve an ip address just for the dns-321 in your router.... so that it will never change - that way whatever link or drive you create/map it'll point to the correct ip address of the dns-321

second, if you are on windows - your windows network could be the culprit, check your windows computer and network for any sleep/awake times/schedules, hibernations, and also check your network card's power status such as "always on" - "allow to sleep" etc....

in mac - it just works :)

third, double-check your dns-321's power management features, do you have it set to sleep after 5-minutes?

let us know what happens! and good luck! :)

If you fully read his post.. he is able to ping the device. Meaning the ip hasnt changed.. Also its not the windows network. Im having the same issue as stated here.... http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=15515.0

I have 2 Desktops running windows 7 and 2 Macbook pros and the problem happens with all computers.

Does the OP actually have any shares setup? Is the iTunes server on? I ask because it seems that he/she is trying to access the web_page link, which is error number one.

Define "disappearing" from network if you can ping it?

Can you access \\device-ip\sharename ?

I am assuming you are using Run and Command/cmd to get a terminal and pinging it, with success.  What address are you using?

What happens if you take the same address that you ping and type it into the address bar of your web-browser?   Does it find the device's web page?  That will tell you if its webserver is active to begin with.

Let us know.
