I am trying to avoid to have to run a PC to make the hole media streaming thing working. Basically I want to be able to be gone from home and my family being able to see videos without turning on PCs etc.
The solution I wanted to get working was the DSM 750 to access a MyBook NAS with the video files on. While the DSM-750 will 'see' the NAS and you can even play .AVI files - it doesn't work for H.264 encoded MP4 files - which is the majority of my video files.
After some going back and forth with D-Link Technical Support it turns out it works - if a PC in the network has the D-Link Media Server running - with a folder 'watching' the NAS drive. Works great - you can fast forward / backward / jump to time sequence and play all supported files.
The downside: PC must be on + the Media Lounge Software is 'shaky' (each it crashes when a new file gets dropped into one of the monitored NAS folders..).
Enough backgrund: Does anyone have a working, 'lean' setup of only DSM-750 and a NAS Drive running? And playing H.264 encoded MP4 files? (I tried to put a USB drive right in there - but does not play them + does not work for a 2 TB drive - 256 MB works.... - D-Link acknowledges bug - but does not know the max size for the USB drive.)

Yes - I just tested an H.264 M4V file and works great. I am running Twonky Media Server v4.4.9 for Linux directly on my DNS-323 to my DSM-750 over the wired network connection. No comp necessary. This version had a packaged installation feature which was good for me as I am a Linux dummy. Once it is set-up you don't interface with Linux at all, rather, you use a web-interface to config your options. There might be a newer version - I haven't checked since mine aint broke so to speak.
I've been running for over a year and it is rock solid. I too was looking for a stand alone solution that I could leave with my family and know I wasn't likely going to get a tech support call from my wife when I was at work. I had too many of those with a PC server. I also have it all hooked up to switch over via a Logitech Harmony remote to further simplify.
I think it only cost me $40 for a perpetual license so I deemed it money well spent. I have used WMC, Tversity extensively and like Twonky the best - largely because I don't need a PC in between and it just WORKS! It doesn't have all the flashy bells and whistles but enough of them so that I can enjoy video, music and MP3 on my DSM-750. I am not sure how it handles the sorting of media but I elect to create custom folders as I prefer that.
To run this, you need a Linux capable NAS - like the DNS-323 that has UPnP media serving capability. I would go all D-link as it works and you have one single throat to choke for support.

Wanted to add..
I've added a second DSM-750 to this set-up. It connects wirelessly thru a DIR-632 on N (I couldn't get it to connect via G so forced an upgrade). Streams video up two floors like a champ, no studder or stops.
Twonky and DNS-323 continue to run solid...I have never had to reboot or restart when I am watching something. Having a great time with D-link.
