The Graveyard - Products No Longer Supported => D-Link Storage => DNS-343 => Topic started by: drick on July 22, 2010, 11:10:43 AM

well, in my ever expanding search to consolidate i now need to explore getting something bigger than the 343. looking around at D-Link options, it looks like nothing else is in their SOHO market, i have to jump WAY upstream into their DSN-1100-10 (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=688). this thing costs 4-5x that of the 343, and only adds one more drive, not a good ROI for me.
it looks like Netgear has a 6 bay diskless system, as does Cisco both of which are significantly cheaper.
anyone else have any experience with any of the 3 units mentioned above?
ideal unit specs -
6 bays
RAID 6 support
2+ GigE links
hackable like 343 (i.e. ffp)
under $1000
nice to have -
iscsi support
vmware certified
encryption included
-
adding one more:
qnap TS-659 looks pretty good

Another interesting solution is the "Data Robotics DroboPro 8-Bay" array.

good call, i like the 8 bays and the RAID 6 support.
are you using one currently or running into the same challenges i am?

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm running two DNS-343s (primary and backup) and am close to running out of HDD space yet again. I'm looking at another pair of 343s or a more expansive solution. The ReadyNAS line is a great product, albeit overpriced for my purposes. I came across the Drobo ~1 year ago, but discounted it because it supported firewire rather than ethernet, but that seems to have changed.

if i could get down to 2 units, that would be very good. wife is not interested in more gear at this point.
;)

The 3TB HDDs slated for release late this year should offset some of my storage concerns - and will ensure my next NAS will last longer before filling-up.

We've had really good luck with the Thecus units as well. They have a 6 and 7 bay version similar to the 4 bay versions we already use. The 4 bay units have never given us problems.
-
You might add Synology to that list. They work well and most of their units are fast.
-
damn, so many good choices here, hard to decide
let's up the ante on features and see if this narrows the field
diskless w/6 bays
RAID 6 supported
hot spare supported
2+ GigE links that support trunking
iscsi supported
vmware certified
energy smart (or at least supporting smart fan control, and spin down HDD's)
under $1200
hackable like 343 (i.e. ffp)

one caveat to my RAID settings above, i need RAID 6 & HS not either or
-
How about a Synology DS1010+ which holds 5 drives and a DX510+ expansion unit which holds another 5 drives. It has raid 6 and 2 gigabit ports. It is a little over your budget but you have up to 10 drives and they are fast. Just a thought.

Does anyone have personal experience using the WD ShareSpace? I've read mixed reviews.

Like Everyone else, stats look good (so did DNS-343) but do they really work as expected?
Here's the two I thought would be good replacements... just cost more....
QNAP has 4, 6 and 8-bay (900, 1300 and 1500$)
QNAP Pro 6-Bay Desktop Network Attached Server TS-659

Cisco Small Business NSS326D00-k9 Diskless System NSS 326 6-Bay

Anyone have one up and running?

Prices as high as that beg the question as to whether it's better to buy a single 6 bay solution or use that money to purchase an additional 3 or 4 DNS-343s.

Get the Qnap = regular updates and good community, plus better hardware specs. It just works.
-
I agree. I would get the Qnap or Synology. They work, updates come out regular and they are fast.
