Hello guys,
I have the DIR-655 1.21 A1/A2 (original firmware was 1.11). I NEVER had ANY issue with that router (irritant were fix reading the forum). It never crashed and it never failed me at any time since I got it in 2007. I have 300 mbps wifi connection on my HP laptop and it's working great.
I know that if it ain't broken, don't fix it... but part of me want to be up to date with my network equipment...
When I go in the menu and want to check for update, the router return me a message that this is the latest firmware version (1.21). Strange thing as I have suggested one of my friend to get one and he has the newer firmware installed in it (1.31). So it must not be a beta anymore ?
I've been reading for some times and all I could read was people getting mad at their decision to update their dlink with a lot of regrets.
Now I read two things. Firmware 1.34NA seems to be reliable and now I see that we can revert from 1.3x to 1.21 even with the A2 revision. I see less complaints about bugs now in most recent post. Is that good news ?
What are real benefits to upgrade to the latest firmware since 1.21 ? I read some of the release notes from 1.21 but is there something Else ?
Thanks !

Unless you need features like secureSpot, Shareport and Guest access: stick with 1.11. No other clear advantages with newer firmware.

ok thanks for the reply.
Mine is at firmware 1.21 but I though I would gain some performence.
I do not need what you describe so I think I'll follow your advice and keep my 1.21 version then.
Thanks

1.34NA Fixed: Bsecure Issue
1.33NA had a security fix: HNAP issue
Plus Fixed DNS relay issue ( WAN Slowdown) and Added Advanced DNS descriptions

i agree with eddiez.. if you dont need those things, then stay to your current firmware. I have a A4 1.21 and i love it. Very stable for me. If your router is stable and such, just keep it as is. Its like "if it isnt broken, dont fix it" motto. Hopefully this helps!
(I reverted back to 1.21 from 1.32 nightmare) :P

I'm still considering downgrading to 1.21 since some of the features still don't work on my router in 1.34 (I must choose between QoS for my VoIP and Access Control filtering).
I may just migrate to 1.21 soon, if I don't just buy a replacement!
-
If youre thinking of buying a replacement. look at the wndr3700. From what i heard/read, it has pretty good reviews. people are saying that its stable with the latest firmware with one thing, you must turn off the traffic meter because people were saying that it writes ever second and can ruin the flash memory thing. Its something like that. Again, I got that info from the netgear foums.

I have a 655 with A3 and 1.32NA but can not upgrade it to 1.33NA nor 1.34NA anyone knows if these firmware upgrades are ONLY for A4 and beyond?
-
If you have the luxury of having a 655 with 1.21, stick with it. PLEASE take my advise, I wish i was in your posiition.

No, the firmwares mentioned are "all versions"

I finally upgrade to 1.34NA but no obvious or noticeable improvements neither on speed nor on freezing or hogging down or extending the range of the 11.n

Hey guys, sorry to bring that old post back... I am still running my 655 rev A1/A2 with stock v1.21.
I did changed my phone recently though for a Galaxy S4 and I sometime receive a notification on my phone from time to time that my wifi connection is unstable even if the wifi signal is full.
I see on the latest firmware 1.34 for the revA in the release notes, it says that it improved the stability of the Galaxy S4...
I am still really hesitant to update as I re-read all the comments on this thread on NOT to update. I have absolutely no issues with the router (after all these years) beside the erratic notifications on my S4.
I know this router is getting really old and less users have this but if someone else in here could tell me more about their update experiences with the older version of the 655, it would be appreciated.
I don't want to "scrap" it as it still work pretty good !

Might need to just upgrade FW.

well... DON'T DO IT... my 655 is now working like hell now with v1.37... as so many other reviews... Not only I cannot obtain 300mbps no more (which I used to have on my hp laptop when set at 40MHz), my S4 wifi did not stabilized either and always report un-reliable connection. Even worst, I lose internet connections now every couple hours which NEVER happend before...
Suddenly, no internet. When I go on my wifi status on my laptop, I am connected to the network but no internet. When I login the router, I see no internet connection in the router status. I need to power down the router in order to regain internet access as a release/renew internet connection never work.
Now I can't rely on that router anymore. I just made the worst decision in so many years (I think 7 years of flawless operation) but now I get an unstable device that did not fix the issue of my S4.
Worst decision I ever took on a hardware device... DON'T DO IT, stay with your old firmwares.

What the FW update process followed? Did you set up from scratch after the 2nd factor reset?
