Title: Basic, moving itunes media to DNS-323
Post by: dmcbride on August 13, 2010, 06:11:27 AM
I've set up the DNS-323, enabled itunes server, and now I want to move all the music and other media I have on my desktop computer itunes library to the DNS-323.  I can't find basic instructions on how to do that, and I don't want to mess around and do it wrong.  Can someone point me to a solution?  Thanks

You do not say if you use OS X or Windows.  I found a document at support.apple.com titled iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder and it worked for me.  I would hope there is a similar document for Windows.  Once at support.apple.com you can search for ht1449 if you are a Mac User.

If you want to use the iTunes server facility all you need to do is copy your media to a folder on the NAS and configure it to use that folder as the source. Those options are under the iTunes section of the NAS.

Assuming you are using Windows, if you want to move your actual iTunes library and media, simply move your iTunes folder on to the NAS and hold down shift when starting iTunes to be prompted as to where the library can be found. Be warned though, accessing the library is very slow this way or at least it was for me.

As a half way house I have my media on the NAS but the actual library on the computer. The media is referenced on the NAS.

I just copied the entire Itunes songs folder onto the NAS and it works perfectly with windows media player / media centre. I just called the directory Itunes and can play quite hapilly from it. MEans I have to copy it over every now and again with new songs etc, but as windows will (if you want) only replace newer items this isn't much of a hassle.

I don't use iTunes, so maybe this question isn't germane.  Isn't there a DRM issue moving the purchased music from iTunes to a different media?  Last time I got involved in an iTunes installation, it was somewhat of a PITA.

Nope - I thought there would be a DRM issue when I copied it over and in all honesty did not expect it to work, or at least I expected to have to hack it. As it turned out, however, it just worked straight away. I am assuming Windows takes care of the DRM somehow. It's great really as I have Itunes to get my music (which I find works well) and WMP/Media Centre to play on any system in the house. I use MCE remotes for most rooms so I can just use MEdia Centre and play my music everywhere including in my bedroom ;)

I'm suitably amazed. ;)

Apple doesn't DRM MP3s on iTunes anymore anyway.

I didn't notice MP3's mentioned, just the iTunes library.  I assumed, perhaps falsely, that it was purchased music in MP4 format.

What I should have said was that iTunes is now DRM free. I was forgetting that they're MP4s.

Well, that I didn't realize!  I thought Apple was still a DRM holdout.
