I had two hard drives running on my DNS-321 for about 6 months. Then I noticed that instead of a blue light on both drives on the front panel, the light for the second drive was pink. In Windows Explorer, I could still open Volume_1, but I could not open Volume_2. So I swapped out the second drive for a new drive, but when I tried formatting the drive, I got the following error:
Hard Drive(s) Formatting Failure(Error Code:112).
I then installed the original drive that was in the DNS-321 into another drive shell, formatted it as NTFS, and ran chkdsk on the drive. I found nothing to indicate that the drive had failed. It seems fine.
I still have the pink light on the front panel representing the second drive (with a new drive in place).
Any suggestions? Does it appear that the interface in the DNS-321 that connects to a second drive is failed?
Thanks very much!

Reset the box to factory defaults and see if that changes it's mind about the state of the drives.

Thanks very much for the suggestion. I Powered off for 5 minutes, then held the reset for 30 seconds, then tried again to format the drive. It goes to about 3%, then fails with the same error: Hard Drive(s) Formatting Failure(Error Code:112).
I tried the reset button again for 30 seconds, tried again to format, and got the same error.

FYI, reset is done with power on. If you didn't try that, give it a shot.
I'd also verify the drive is error-free by using the disk manufacturer diagnostics in a PC for a full surface scan.

Thanks again - I think it was reset properly because password and other setting were reset. I think you may be right that I could have two bad drives though. I'll run the diagnostics as you say.
thank you very much again for your help!!
