Title: Starting with one drive, adding 2nd later
Post by: PatrickHuard on August 26, 2010, 03:52:55 PM
Hi, I bought a DNS-323 and it's currently running with only 1 drive. There is still no data on the hard drive because I am waiting for the 2nd drive to do RAID Mirror.

Can I start adding data to the drive now, and when I will receive the 2nd drive, add it and make it RAID Mirror without loosing data already on first drive?

Yes - when you insert the second drive it will prompt you to format it, and there is a box you can check and it will format the drive and then sync the data - I've heard horror stories about the DNS-323 formatting both disks, so be sure to back up before you insert that second disk.

*Should* be ok, but as mentioned there is a small chance it will screw up, so copy the files to it rather than moving them. Once the mirror is setup you can feel more confident, but always a good idea to keep  a backup of important stuff anyway.

i have a similar question

i have 1 drive in now, as individual, with data on it

can i add a second individual drive later without it trying to format original

i assume so, but may as well make sure

Thanks

Same answer as above.

Ok, it worked! 2nd arrived faster than I thought =)

The DNS formated it and I still have all my data.

That's great news!

I too added a second drive well after getting going and had no issues. I wasn't aware there could be issues until I read here in the forums AFTER I had added a second drive.

This is just what I did when I get my 323 last month. I stuck in one Samsung F3 1GB drive (left side) and put some data on it. When my 2nd Samsung F3 came in about a week later, I popped that in the right bay and logged into the 323. Followed the prompts to format and set it up as RAID 1. The unit formatted the new drive, copied the date from the old drive to the new drive and is now running a 2 drive unit in RAID 1 without issues. I did not back up data as I still had the source.

My only problem was that I had to redo the group and user permission setup, that seemed to have gotten corrupted somehow resulting in loss of access.
