Title: New 323 died after just 4 days.
Post by: mrnifty on August 28, 2010, 02:29:44 PM
Just had it up and running. Upgraded to newest firmware the day I received it. All was well. Then today the electricity went out for about a minute. Yes it was plugged into a new electronics power strip.
Called tech support. Went thru a bunch of things. The power light just flashes.

NOT a happy camper.

Any recommendations for a replacement in the same price range?

Those things happen, I wouldn't let one power surge sour you on the product.  I have a DNS-323 that has lived through countless thunder storms.

You could have the most expensive NAS money can buy and what happened to you could still happen.

The DNS-323 is a good product, despite what some might say.

Living in the Lightning capital of the world (Tampa Bay, FL) with a power company that loves sticking it to us with rolling brownouts, I've learned the hard way (one month old LCD TV died after a 3 in a row set of brown outs)  to protect everything with UPS units and not to rely on surge suppressors. As from what I've been told the abrupt voltage drop and return can do some major damage to electronic equipment that a surge suppressor doesn't seem to protect against.

All my computer equipments as well as my A/V stuff is hooked through UPS units (I have about 6 of them). Even though it only gives perhaps 3 to 4 minutes of battery power on my HTS and LCD TV, that's enough to protect them from a brown-out and enough time for me to turn everything off in case of a power failure. It's cheaper to replace a $40 to $60 UPS than a $800 HTS or $600 TV.  Or $200 NAS.

I've protected all my stuff with UPS units for many years.  I've only lost one UPS to lightning, and none of the protected equipment.

You might look at a Synology DS210j. More bang for your buck.

A bang and then smoke, if it's subjected to the same as your DNS was
