Title: To those who think their Router is Broken or substandard
Post by: marmoduke on September 13, 2010, 07:59:07 AM
Do a chkdisk /f to make sure your computer disk is not corrupt before downloading files.

1.  Download a fresh copy of 1.34NA, your previous download may be corrupt.  Do it from here using FTP to minimize errors:   ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655/Firmware/

2.  Save all your desired settings or write them down.

3.  Unhook all wired connections except for port #1 which is the station you will be working from.

4.  Remove power from 655.

5.  Reinstall power cord to 655 while holding the "reset" button on the back.  Keep the button depressed for a full thirty seconds.

6.  Now do the upgrade of the firmware from the fresh copy that you downloaded.

7.  Reboot the router and make any necessary config changes.  I suggest you do it from your notes, not by your backup file, which also may be corrupt.

8.  When reestablishing your wireless do a complete shakedown of your wireless NIC.  Latest drivers, reinstall if necessary.  If your wireless NIC is a dlink, do not use the install CD.  You will be better off without the dlink 'CONNECTION MANAGER"  program installed.  Use the Microsoft connection manager.

When I bought my router (2+ years) my initial download caused some hidden problems which this clean install solved.  I do this procedure with every upgrade and have had no problems like the ones i read about here.

if you are concerened about the file being corrupt why not check the md5 checksum

DIR655A4_FW134NAb03.bin
MD5 checksum: 15644CB5660A27E7DC3EAF2CEA785CC7

It is possible for download checksums to be correct, but, disk errors (needing chkdsk) bad sectors etc, to actually corrupt the file slightly.  Doesn't take much to provoke a read error when you are doing your flash upgrade.

It shouldn't be, even a single bit change caused by corruption will result in a different checksum
