Title: Volume 1 missing after reboot
Post by: jimc on September 24, 2010, 02:48:09 PM
A very strange sequence of events:

The NAS device was removed from the network. No one was able to connect to the device so it was restarted. On restart things looked okay, until I noticed that it was reporting as 1.2 terrabytes in size (and full); I was running a RAID-1 with two 500 gig drives.

Another restart, and volume 1 is no longer there. I logged in via the web interface and the only option is gives me is what RAID to use. I am reluctant to chose one because I have a feeling that it does not recognize the drives and will simply reformat them.

To top all of this off, I used Disk Internals Linux Reader and was able to browse the content of the drive. The file structure was there but every folder contained the same set of files. There were also many files that were now 0 bytes in size. This is true for both drives that were in the NAS device.

So... any idea what happened, and is there anything that can be done to recover the drives?

Have you tried running the scandisk tool from the web interface?
You might also try putting the drives in a PC and using manufacturers diagnostics to check the health of them.

I wouldn't follow the prompt to set RAID type and reformat, you'll loose your data.

You might also try a Windows Linux filesystem driver to read the drives, such as ext2fsd, to recover your data.

I could not get past the select raid option in the web interface, so I could not run the scandisk tool.

The disks ended up getting shipped off to a data recovery specialist. Apparently the MFT was either corrupted or destroyed. The good news is almost all of the data is recoverable.

You should seriously consider purchasing a second NAS to backup your data to avoid this from happening in the future.  The cost is well worth knowing your data is secure.

Isn't MFT for NTFS partitions?
