Title: Upsizing HDD after RAID1 failure

I have a RAID1 array based on two Western Digital 500Gb WD5000AAKS drives. One of them has died today. I am tempted to replace it with a 1Tb drive and rebuild the array, is this possible? What will happen when I later replace the remaining (good) 500Gb drive with another 1Tb one? Will I still end up with a 500Gb array, or will I be able to convert it to 1Tb one (without reformatting the drives)?

You will have a 500GB array.

You'll need to reformat them (both 1TB drives together) to get a 1TB array.

Since RAID is NOT backup, you should have a backup anyway.

I'd remove the remaining 500GB drive, connect it to a Windows machine running a EXT2 disk driver and use it as the backup.  Put the two 1TB drives in the box and format them.

If you are buying *new* drives, consider spending about $5 more to upgrade the 1TB drives to 2TB :) Lots of good deals out there now. Just be sure to read the warning about WD EAR drives.
