Title: Trying to setup FTP backup for Dad's Mac. Folder creates but can't write to it.
Post by: bigwebb83 on October 03, 2010, 10:36:31 AM
I'm trying to set my dad's mac up to be able to automatically backup via ftp to my DNS-323.  I've got it setup so that it logs in and creates a folder in the nas but it's unable to write any files to the folder.  Any ideas what could be causing this?

How are you getting it to do that? A little background would be helpful I.e which software and configuration.

Is there a FTP user created with R/W access that you are logging on with?
Are you running at least 1.08 firmware?

I've tried using Bonkey and parachute on the mac.  I do have a user setup with r/w access to the root directory for ftp.  I'm running firmware version 1.09.  Bonkey says can't create directory.  When i go to the ftp site in safari and it opens in finder and i look at the info it says that the permission is read only although I know its not.

So you are logging in as the FTP user you defined with full read write access on a normal FTP client and you can create folders but not files? Or you can create folders but not files inside it? Or you can't create anything? (makes more sense but contradicts what you originally wrote)

My question is, why are you trying to FTP files to the NAS?  Using a terminal session you can create a small script that will create a .tar file of the desired directories and write it directly to a directory on the NAS.  You could also just copy the files.

Nightly I tar the contents of my $HOME directory and write it to Volume_1 and then copy it to Volume_2.  The whole process takes about eight minutes.  The compressed file is 1.7 GB.

I will provide more information if you are interested.
Peace

It is on my fathers computer which is at his house.  That is why I am using ftp.  I am trying to use a program that automates the backup process.  It is called bonkey.  It will create the destination folder for the backup but then doesn't deposit any files inside of it.  The error that the program gives is "failed to create directory".  I was able to download a pure ftp client for the mac and begin to upload the "documents" folder (including files) but it only uploaded about 1 mb before it stopped.

Sounds like a flaky connection.

connection is fine.  I can log in on their connection to the ftp server via my dell and everything is fine.

Can you, using your Dell and their connection, create directories and transfer data to the DNS-323?  If the answer is yes, that immediately removed the DNS-323 from the list of suspects, and you can focus your time & attention on the Mac.

the answer is yes.  It is deffinitely the mac that is causing the problem.  And through my reading it's apparent that macs are not good with ftp to begin with.

It sounds like you answered your own question. Issue with the mac and not the 323?

It was not an issue with either actually.  It was more an issue with there being a ton of software out there that CLAIMS to be able to do this for the mac but out of no less than 10 pieces tested only ONE worked like I wanted it to.  It's called aasync.

That's why my mac is on the bottom shelf, and there's a PC on my desk  ;D there's a ton more software available, so it's usually not difficult to find something that will do what I want.
