One of my DNS 323s that is configured as RAID 1 with firmware 1.09 continues to show the right "cylinder" blue light continues to blink when the unit is powered on after accessing it making it appear that this drive does not enter sleep even though I have it set for 10 minutes in the Idle Timer setting. (I have changed it and saved it to see if this helps and it doesn't). The only way to stop it from blinking is to turn it off and repower without accessing the drive. Once the drive(s) is accessed, the light starts blinking again.
Has anyone have this issue or found a solution?

Try:
1. A factory reset
2. Unplugging the network cable to see if it still does it
3. Disable third party add-ons, bit torrent, FFP etc.
4. If you use the 323 as a print server, could it be the spooler
-
You could put a sniffer on the network as see what kind of traffic it is.
-
Unplugging the network cable does nothing so it likely is not anything on the network causing it to not sleep. Could this have something to do with RAID 1 and continually making sure the drives are matching and not allowing it to sleep?
How does one do a factory reset without losing the data?
-
Depending on what is running, even unplugging the cable can have no effect.
The status page would show if the mirroring is being rebuilt or not. Even a Raid1 configuration will sleep.
Reseting to factory defaults does not erase/format the drives. It will erase the configuration though and it should be re-entered, not loaded from a saved configuration file if the firmware was updated at some point.
-
I did check the status page and there is no rebuild going on. Only the right side "cylinder" blue light blinks not the left one. However, when there is activity on the drives, both lights blink so it's something with the #1 drive continuing to be active.....
How does one perform a reset on the unit without losing data?
-
Web interface > Tools > System > Restore To Factory Default Settings
-
There is also a reset button on the back that you can use with a paper clip.
-
I actually just "downgraded" the firmware from 1.09 to 1.08 and the light no longer continuously blinks....
-
There's no difference between the versions other than cloud backup facility.
-
There must be some difference in the sleep/hibernation as my DNS323 is now sleeping with the downgraded firmware to 1.08 and not constantly showing activity. Even the temperatue is about 8 degrees cooler since there is no activity at any given time.
-
Try upgrading again and do a factory reset
There is no difference other than cloud backup support

drmark12pa, I just registered on this site to say I have the exact same problem and tried factory reset as other have suggested. Nothing works. The only thing that solves it is roll back to 1.08 like you said. I think I will just stay with 1.08 for now.

When you say 1.09 where is this version , as the only version I see is Firmware 1.08B09 (7956 KB)

I was out of town for a few days, plugged in my NetBook and couldn't reach the drive...looked at the unit and noticed main square button power / reset / indicator and right HDD LED blinking in harmony. The left HDD was not blinking. The other DNS units on the network were OK.
Could not reach the Admin Page. Unit did not respond to several reset attempts. Unplugged the power at the DNS unit - not the power adapter - let it sit for 1 minute and plugged the power back in. Pushed the main square indicator button / switch and unit went into a normal start up process; went back on line...worked for me.
Thanks for the tips - they may not all work for all situations, but in this case yes.
Firmware is 1.09, installed a few months ago.
